Transport Phenomena Exam Paper

This document contains instructions and questions for a Transport Phenomena exam. It lists 8 questions related to topics in heat, mass, and momentum transfer. The questions range from deriving equations to calculating values to explaining concepts. Students are instructed to answer any 5 of the 8 questions, which will be worth between 6-16 marks each for a maximum total of 80 marks. Diagrams, sketches, and chemical equations should be provided as needed to illustrate the answers.

P. Pages : 1 AHK/KW/19/2561
Time : Three Hours *1543* Max. Marks : 80
_____________________________________________________________________
Notes : 1. All questions carry marks as indicated.
2. Solve any five questions.
3. Due credit will be given to neatness and adequate dimensions.
4. Assume suitable data whenever necessary.
5. Diagrams and chemical equations should be given whenever necessary.
6. Illustrate your answers whenever necessary with the help of neat sketches.
7. Use of non programmable calculator is permitted.

1. a) Methanol is withdrawn from a tank at a rate which increases linearly with time. At one 10
point in time the tank contains 2000kg of liquid and withdrawal rate is 70kg/hr 50 hours
later the withdrawal rate of 80kg/hr. Methanol is also added to the tank at 150 kg/hr.
Calculate
a) The mass of methanol when the withdrawal rate was 80kg/hr.
b) Time required to empty the tank.
b) An iron bar of dimension 3cm  5cm 10cm at 120ºC is dropped in a vessel containing 6
water at 30ºC. The vessel is large enough so that increase in temperature of water is
negligible. The rate at which heat is transferred from bar to water is given by
Q = UA ( Tbar − Twater ) Estimate the time required by rod to reach a temperature of 50ºC.
Given U = 0.05J / m 2 º C specific heat of bar = 0.46J / 9mº C; density of iron = 7.7 g/cc.
2. Derive the velocity profile, average velocity, maximum velocity and mass flow rate for a 16
Newtonian fluid flowing through a narrow slit formed by two parallel walls.
3. a) Show that N u = 2 for heated sphere suspended in a large pool of liquid. 10
b) An aluminium fin 3mm Thick and 7.5cm long is extended from wall. The base (wall) is 6
maintained at 300ºC. The ambient temperature is 50ºC. For a thermal conductivity of
aluminium to be 300 W/mc and heat transfer coefficient to be 10W / m2hc, calculate the
heat loss from fin per unit depth.

4. Derive shell mass balance for diffusion through stagnant gas film. Consider a diffusion 16
system in which liquid A is evaporating into stagnant gas B.
5. Derive the Navier stokes equation in cartesian coordinate system. 16
6. State the theories of mass transfer and explain any one of them with appropriate sketch 16
and equations.
7. Explain the following. 16
a) Dimensionless numbers in heat, mass and momentum transfer.
b) Equation of boundary layer thickness for mass transfer.
8. Explain in brief any two of the following. 16
a) Reynold's Analogy for momentum and heat transfer.
b) Prandtl Analogy.
c) Von Karman Analogy.
