Grammar – Modals of Speculation

Modals of speculation show how certain you are about something that happened in
the past, is happening in the present, or will happen in the future.

“Must” can be used as a modal of speculation. must + have + V3 shows that the
speaker is very certain about something that happened in the past.

Example:

Well, you must have really impressed the people at Bradley and Associates last
week.

__________________________________________________________________

112
The pattern should + infinitive is used to show that the speaker is somewhat
certain about a future event or ability, but not completely certain.

Example:

We should be able to negotiate a salary of ten percent more.

__________________________________________________________________

Can’t + infinitive shows that the speaker is very uncertain about something.

Example:

No way. That can’t be true!

__________________________________________________________________

The pattern would/will + infinitive is used to ask how likely a future event is. In
this case, “would” means that the speaker doesn’t yet have the job. “Will” means
that the speaker has the job.

Examples:

Would there be much opportunity for professional development at this company?

__________________________________________________________________

Will there be much opportunity for professional development at this company?

__________________________________________________________________

In this context, “could” is a modal of speculation. The speaker is a little certain

that one event can affect a future event.

Example:

You’ve been in the industry longer than I have, so your help could give me the
edge I need to beat the other candidates.

__________________________________________________________________

__________________________________________________________________
113
In this context, “might” and “may” are modals of
speculation. They both mean that the speaker is a little
certain, but not completely, about a future event.

Examples:

It might be Wednesday, but I’m waiting for confirmation.

__________________________________________________________________

It’s possible that I may also supervise a few other employees.

Grammar – Say vs Tell

You can use the reporting verb “say” to introduce reported speech.

Examples:
Tim said he was leaving.

__________________________________________________________________

Martin said he could help me.

__________________________________________________________________

When you use the reporting verb “tell”, you have to identify who is being told.
“Say” requires the word “to” if you’re identifying who is being told.

Examples:
He told her that the computer was broken and that they were using a laptop
temporarily.

__________________________________________________________________

__________________________________________________________________

He said to her that the computer was broken and that they were using a laptop
temporarily.

__________________________________________________________________

__________________________________________________________________

141
Sometimes we use “tell” to report a command. In this case, we use “to” + verb.

Example:
The manager told him to come in early the next day.

__________________________________________________________________

Grammar – Should + have + V3 – Review

Examples:
I should have gotten up earlier. I wouldn’t be late now.

__________________________________________________________________

They should have let us know. What are we going to do now?

__________________________________________________________________

You should have received my e-mail. I sent it a half hour ago.

__________________________________________________________________

Grammar – Should vs Ought to

“Should” and “ought to” often express probability. Both forms introduce
infinitives and, usually, refer to the present. “Should” describes events that are
desirable or probable. «Повинен» і «повинен» часто виражають ймовірність.
Обидві форми вводять інфінітив і, як правило, посилаються на теперішній
час. «Повинен» описує події, які є бажаними або ймовірними.

Examples:
The train should arrive very soon.

__________________________________________________________________

They shouldn’t be hard to find.

__________________________________________________________________

The distinction between “should” and “ought to” is often ignored. “Ought to”
implies an expectation or assumption. Різниця між «повинен» і «повинен» часто
ігнорується. «Треба» означає очікування або припущення.

176
Example:
He is intelligent. He ought to pass the exam.

__________________________________________________________________

Grammar – Present Perfect Continuous

Examples:
They’ve been living together for a long time.
