Building Utilities 3 Lecture
Introduction
Spaces for Speech range from a 10-seat capacity room in educational formats to a
100-seat capacity auditorium and eventually to a 1,000-seat capacity theatre. The need for
understanding from the speaker and their audience usually becomes a major factor when
creating designs for spaces for speech whereas they need coherence towards each other. This
phenomenon is known as acoustic intimacy. The gymnasium of First City Providential
College in San Jose Del Monte, Bulacan, the public library in Dornburn, Austria, and the
Cine Adarna of the University of the Philippines will be the three buildings used to
understand acoustic intimacy. These three are specifically chosen to compare and contrast
what eventually led to the development of their design.
Methods

It has five meters wide entrance with customized windows on each side. These windows
allow sunlight to permeate across the entire gymnasium for natural lighting ventilation.

The façade is inspired by books arranged on shelves. There are 8000 stylized prefabricated
ceramic books mounted on a steel frame at a distance of 70 cm from the glazed façade.
The approach of the interior design is a cozy environment like a public living room in which
people can come together, share interests, and gain new knowledge.

Cine Adarna
It was designed by Honorato Paloma
and was finished in 1984. It is a
veritable art cinema unique in the
Philippines that shows different
movies every day. The Cine Adarna
also become a regular venue for many
international film programs offered by
different embassies and other cultural
institutions.
Results
There are three different methods that increase each structure’s sound quality for the FCPC
Gymnasium, Public Library in Austria, and in Cine Adarna. Sound masking techniques such as the
installation of acoustic panels and isolation of rooms and spaces are major factors towards the decrease of
unnecessary noise. It is due to natural and cultural factors that affect the soundproofing of spaces of the
three aforementioned buildings.
