Brahmagupta

Brahmagupta was an influential 7th century Indian mathematician who made several important contributions to mathematics. Some of his key contributions included being the first to recognize and formalize the use of zero as a numerical value, providing rules for working with negative numbers, solving quadratic equations, and developing formulas for the areas of geometric shapes. He also made advances in indeterminate equations and applied algebra to astronomy. Brahmagupta wrote extensively and is considered one of the most important mathematicians of his time, with his works continuing to be studied today.

BRAHMAGUPTA
(598-668 AD)
He was an Indian mathematician
and Astronomer. Born in city of
Introduction Bhinmal, Rajasthan and is
considered one of the most
influential mathematicians of his
time.
He wrote several important works,
the most renowned being his
treatise called "Brahma-sphuta-
siddhanta" at age of 30.
He gave four different methods of
multiplication namely, a)Gau
Mutrika b)Khanda c) Bheda d) Ista
Notable
contributions
❑ Introduction of zero : He is often credited
with being the first mathematician to
formalize the use of the number zero as a
numerical value and not just a place holder.
❑ Negative numbers : He provided rules for
dealing with negative numbers and
explained their mathematical operations
such as addition, subtraction, multiplication
and division.
❑ Quadratic equations :
Brahmagupta worked on
quadratic equations and
provided methods for solving
them.
❑ Geometry : He
made contributions to geomet
ric concepts such as the
area of triangles and cyclic
quadrilaterals.
❑ Area of quadrilateral
whose sides are a,b,c and d
is, square root of (s-a)(s-b)(s-
c)(s-
d) where s is ½(a+b+c+d)

❑ Indeterminate equations :
He worked on
indeterminate equations and
found general solutions for
certain cases.
❑ He gave rules for the
determination of the last
term and for the
determination of the sum of
a given arithmetical series
as
" The period, less 1, multiplied
by common difference, being
added to the first term, is the
amount of last term" ie, l = a +
(n-1)d.
"Half the sum of the last term
and the first term is the mean
amount, which multiplied by the
period is the sum of whole" S =
((a+l)/2)n.
Brahmagupta was the first
Indian writer who applied
algebra to astronomy. He
was a great mathematician,
an astronomer and a poet.
He remains an important
figures in the history of
mathematics and his
contributions continue to
be studied and appreciated
by scholars and
mathematics to this day.
while commenting on his
contribution, the famous
mathematician
Bhaskaracharya designed
Brahmagupta as 'Gem of
the circle of
mathematicians'.
