Certain time in the past
Sit.1 Napoleon Bonaparte was* a great leader. He won* many battles.

*A verb can carry a color in simple present (blue) and simple past (green) only in an affirmative statement or if it’s the verb “to be”.
We use simple past to talk about or confirm past events that happened at a certain time.
