DESIGN PROCEDURE CALCULATION
SECTION
Assume a uniform stress block for concrete
10.2.7 compression zone and the two top studs as tension
components
9.2 Equate the internal forces and solve for a : 0.85 f'c a b = Ae fy
9.3.1 a = Ae fy / (0.85 f'c b )
a = Ae 50 / [ 0.85 (4) (7) ]
a = 2.1 Ae
Equate the external (required strength) and internal Mu = øMn
moment (design strength) and solve the resulting 70 = 0.9 Ae (50) (6 - 2.10 Ae / 2)
quadric equation for Ae : Ae = 0.311 in.²
For 2 studs in tension, Ae per Stud is: Ae /stud = 0.16 in.²
M16 bolt tension area (as per table chart) Ae /stud = 0.23 in.² Accepted
(Selected Stud should be higher then the
calculated Studs in tension)
B.6.5.2 Since this is an embedded base plate,
Section B.[Link] is applicable
The stud area not used for moment is available Asv = 2 (0.23-0.16) + 2 (0.23)
for shear transfer by shear friction. Asv = 0.61 in.²
B.[Link] Shear-friction coefficient 0.9
Nominal shear strength Vn = 0.9 Asv fy
Vn = 0.9 (0.61 x 50)
Vn = 27.40 kips
B.6.2.2 Capacity reduction factor for shear ø = 0.85
9.2 Design shear strength must be greater than the ø Vn = 0.85 (27.4 kips)
9.3 required strength (ø Vn > Vu) ø Vn = 23.29 kips Accepted
In order to ensure rigid base plate behavior, it is
essential that the base plate not yield on either the
compression or tension side of connection
Determine minimum base plate thickness to M = Tdt
prevent base plate yielding. The moment in the or
plate at the edge of attached member is used for M = Cdc
sizing the base plate thickness. The larger of the
moment on tension side or the compression side (whichever is greatest)
will control the design of the base plate
Mpment on tension side M = Tdt
M = Ae fy dt
M = (0.311) (50) (1.0)
M = 15.56 in.-kips
Moment on compression side M = Cdc
M = Ae fy dc
M = (0.311) (50) (6 - f'c - a /2)
M = 0.311 (50) [2 - 2.1 (0.311) / 2]
M = 26.02 in.-kips (to be use for as calculation base)
Nominal moment capacity of base plate Mn = Fy S
Mn = Fy (b t ² /6) = (36)(7)t² /6
Mn = 42 t²
42 t² = 26.02
t² = 0.62
t = 0.787130828056042 in.
Thickness of base Plate required t = 20 mm Thickness
B.5.1.1 Calculate design Load assuming all studs may resist Put = As fut
concurrent tensile load Put = 4 (0.23)(60)
Put = 55.20 kips
B.4.2 Calculate capacity of concrete

Assume the outer boundaries of the stress cone Acp = 5 (5) + 4 (5) (7.1) + (7.1)²pi - 4 (0.79)
are connected by tangens. Acp = 349.3 in.²
Therefore,
