Complete one of the following tasks in at least 400 words.

1. You are concerned about the problem of finding a place in your city or town to park your car. People
seem to park without any thought for others living in the area. Write a letter to a member of the local
government, explaining the problem and suggesting some possible solutions.

2. A meeting has been arranged which will be attended by about a hundred supporters and opponents of
a proposal to build an incinerator in your area to burn domestic and industrial waste. You have strong
views on this issue and, as the chairperson of the local conservation society, you have been invited to
make a speech to the meeting. Write the text of your speech.

3. You were very impressed by a book you read or a play you saw as part of your English B course.
Imagine you can communicate with the characters. Write a letter to the character (not the actor) that
impressed you most, explaining in detail why you chose him or her. Don’t forget to name the work
and the character.

4. You have been asked by the editor of your school newspaper to write a review of a film that made
you think seriously about its theme. You believe this film is an important one for young adults. Write
your review.

5. A travel agency in your home town or city is running a competition to encourage tourists to visit.
Entrants have to write an article about the town. The prize is a holiday worth $1,000 to a destination
of your choice, so you decide to enter. Write your article.

6. You are the secretary of a committee established to research your fellow-students’ attitudes to the
local environment. The principal has asked you to report to the student body, describing the present
situation and recommending any changes that should be made. Write the text of your report, which
you will give in a talk at an assembly.
