Title of Thesis: The Experiences of a Male and Female Breadwinner within Family
Pressure

I. Introduction/Rationale

The inflation in the Philippines is continuing to rise, the salary was not getting

enough to sustain the daily needs of the family. In view of the ongoing rise in costs and

decline in revenue, it is challenging to get by on a low daily salary. All people are

affected, especially those people who are the breadwinner of their family. Whether

they're male or female is being pressured as a provider of their respective household.

The Philippines’ annual inflation in October 2022 accelerated to its quickest pace in

almost 14 years, driven mainly by higher food costs, opening the door for sustained

tightening by the central bank. (Lopez, 2022). Filipinos are known to be close family ties

because we believe that household is our top priority. The researcher wanted to focus

on the perspective of a male and female breadwinner when it comes to family pressure

that they accepted.

A breadwinner is an individual who provides the main financial support for a

household, usually a male family member in the traditional model in some western

cultures (Chapman, 2004). A breadwinner contributing a largest portion in the

household income. In the past, men were designated as the leaders of the family

household in the Philippines. This practice was both conventional and governed by the

legal system. The spouse or male is classified as the family provider or the breadwinner

of the household affairs in the 1950 Philippine Civil Code. As time evolved, women

excel in their job and profession according to Statistic on Labor Force Survey 2005 to

2013. Even when it comes to handling the demands of their families and managing their

finances well, women can keep up with males in any situation. The perception of a male

and female breadwinner within in a family circle was the pinpoint of this research. Both

male and female experiencing struggles on how they strive to make ends meet with

regards to household expenses. The difference is their perception when it comes to a

family pressure. In addition, men who will be criticized when they don't work or do low-

quality job and feel excessive pressure from their families, their masculinity, and their

pride as men, women's work becomes routine over time with no judgment but respect

for their ability.

We have diverse perspectives on life, particularly when it comes to pressure from

the family. Over time, we should be open to everything, especially if we are the family's

primary provider. We often feel pressurized to start a family even when we are not

ready. Finding out whether there would be a connection between the perception of a

breadwinner and family strain is the primary goal of this study. This study will be
beneficial to the people or future researchers that looking for valid and other perception

weather they are male or female when it comes to family obligations, and this study

might also bring enough awareness for everyone especially in a family that gives a lot of

pressure to those who are the breadwinners.

II. Literature Review

Female breadwinners are increasing in industrialized society, challenging

traditional western gender norms (Meisenbach, 2010). He studied the experiences of

female breadwinners and gendered identity in family spaces, finding that the

research participants felt a sense of control and power on the decision making in

their lives. The participants also experienced pressure as the prime breadwinner in

their family and worried about what could happen to their families if they lost their

jobs. Some participants felt guilt and resentment regarding their dereliction of house

duties.

Female breadwinners are increasingly common in the workplace, little

research has focused specifically on the experiences of female breadwinners.

Experiences on how they strive to make ends meet with regards to household

expenses, the stress and disappointments brought by their workloads in school and

at home, not to mention the tensions and disappointments between their husbands

and children. (Taruc, 2019) The researcher found it essential to gain insights on how

these women struggle in their everyday lives and succeed in their endeavors, and at

work. With these, this phenomenological research aimed to address some of the

preceding issues by what women experience as the breadwinners of the family, its
impact on them with regards to their individuality, relationship with their families and

career growth found meaning and substance.

The sole provider meaning is simple: You are the only individual in your

household who earns an income. Whether you’re single or part of a couple, you can be

a sole breadwinner—and if you are in this role, you’ve likely experienced the stress that

comes along with it at some point in your life (Dippel, 2021).
