AREQ

This document describes the development and validation of an instrument called the Active Reading Experience Questionnaire. The questionnaire aims to study the active reading activities that students engage in. It contains questions about the importance of various reading strategies related to technology use, reading purpose, and physical reading techniques. Respondents are asked to rate how important they believe each strategy is on a 7-point scale. The questionnaire is administered in two scenarios - one with a difficult course where more study is needed, and one with an easy course where less study is required. This allows examination of how reading approaches may differ based on course difficulty.

Active Reading Experience Questionnaire

I believe the following strategies are important:

7 6 5 4 3 2 1

Strongly Agree Somewhat Neutral Somewhat Disagree Strongly

Agree Agree Disagree Disagree
Technology
Take notes on a digital device (i.e., laptop,
smartphone, tablet)
Mark parts of a video (i.e., make note of a specific
point in the video timeline so you can add a note to it
or easily find that point in the video later)
Save portions of a video
Take notes over video content
Record audio notes
Purpose
Comprehend what I read or watch (for example, be
able to answer questions about it and discuss topics
in my own words)
Memorize parts of the educational material
Search for a specific piece of information
Analyze the educational material for accuracy
Evaluate educational material to form my own opinion
Synthesize what I read or watched (i.e., combine
information to see how it all fits together)
Understand the author’s purpose
Understand the structure of the educational material
Understand the author’s stance
Physical strategies
Highlight text
Make notes of key terms
Organize annotations (i.e., notes) into a different
format
Test myself over the information
Rank my annotations (i.e., notes) in order of
importance
Summarize educational material in my own words
Mark main ideas
Create a practice test
Make an outline of the material
Make a flow chart of the material
Make note cards
Survey each chapter by reading the introductory and
concluding paragraphs, headings, subheadings,
visual captions, review questions, etc.
Make study questions
Cross-reference information from lecture notes and
information from the assigned educational materials
Orally recite what I’ve read or watched after each
section/main topic

Now, imagine an educational learning experience that involves a very easy course in which you feel very knowledgeable about the
content and know you can pass the tests fairly easily. Again, the test will be based on a chapter of a textbook and two related videos.
Please answer the following questions based on this new scenario.
