CHAPTER 1
INTRODUCTION
Background of the Study
Participation in sports is crucial for students, contributing to their overall development and enhancing
the positive image of our school. Beyond promoting physical fitness, sports instill valuable life skills
such as teamwork and discipline. Globally, schools acknowledge the multifaceted benefits of sports.
Active student involvement in sports reflects our commitment to holistic education. This participation
not only fosters camaraderie but also showcases the school’s vibrant spirit. Emphasizing the
importance of sports contributes to a positive and dynamic image of the school, highlighting our
dedication to nurturing well-rounded individuals..
The NASBE report (2004) states that “Engaging In daily practices instills in the players qualities of
discipline, teamwork, physical fitness, and organization”. Acquiring these skills can enhance a
student’s ability to find success in the classroom. Nevertheless, there are studies that contradict the
previous statement. There are also factors influencing this study encompass time management,
discipline, and the psychological impact of sports on student-athletes. Delving into these elements can
unveil the intricate relationship between athletic engagement and academic success.
In Arteche National High School, there exists a recognized enthusiasm for sports, but the precise
effects on academic achievement remain less explored. Understanding this dynamic will contribute to
the tailored development of our students. The motivation behind this study originates from the
recognition that a balanced investigation into sports and academics can provide a comprehensive
understanding of student development.
The researchers noticed that most of the academic performance student-athletes in Arteche National
High School are somehow affected by their participation in sports events outside the school. That is
why the researchers prompt to conduct this study and aim to unravel these specific impact within our
school, guiding educators and administrators in enhancing overall student well-being. By identifying

patterns, challenges, and successes, the researchers aim to offer insights that can inform educational
strategies, ensuring a harmonious integration of sports and academics for the holistic development of
our students.
2
Statement of the Problem
The study aims to determine the impact of Sports Participation to the academic perfomance of
Students-athletes of Arteche National High School. Specifically, below are the questions that this
study wants to answer.
1. What is the percentage number of students-athletes that their academic performance is affected
by sports event participation?
2. What is the average grade of the students in Arteche National High School who are
participating in the different sport events?
3. To what extent does participating sports events affects the academic performance of student-
athletes of Arteche National High School?
4. What are the impacts of sports participation on the academic performance of the student-athletes
in Arteche National High School?
3
Scope and Delimitations
This study aims to determine the impact of sports participation to the academic performance
of student-athletes in Arteche National High School
The variables included in this study are the respondents' personal information. This study was
conducted at Arteche National High School in the first semester of S.Y. 2023-2024. Specifically, the
respondents of this study are the student-athletes that are always participating in sports events,
whether it is inside the school or outside . The study does not include students in Arteche National
High School who are not actively participating sport events. Since some of this events happened at the
same day as regular classes, the researchers aim to determine if the participation of student-athletes to
these sports event affect their academic performance.
This study is limited to the students in Arteche National High School who are participating in
sports event. A semi-structured researcher-made questionnaire is the research instrument that the
researchers will used in gathering data from respondents. The Quantitative Data gathered will be
analyzed, interpreted, and tabulated using Descriptive statistical tools such as Percentage and
Weighted Mean, and Standard Deviation. At the same time, the Qualitative Data the researchers,
gathered will also be analyzed and interpreted using Thematic Analysis. Afterwards, the researchers
will combine the quantitative and qualitative data that will be analyzed to come up with more reliable
outcome

Theoretical Framework
Theoretical Framework anchored the theories, principles, concepts, and ideas that are related
to this study. It is very crucial part because it will be the foundation that the researchers needed to
understand the impact of Sports Participation to the Academic performance of student-athletes of
Arteche National High School.
Self-Determination Theory
Self-Determination Theory (SDT) is a psychological framework developed by Edward L.
Deci and Richard M. Ryan, offers a comprehensive understanding of human motivation and behavior.
At its core, SDT places a significant emphasis on autonomy, competence, and relatedness as pivotal
components in fostering intrinsic motivation.
One of the SDT discussed about the concept of autonomy. This theory asserts that individuals
possess an innate need for autonomy, seeking a sense of control over their actions and choices. This
autonomy, in turn, contributes to the development of intrinsic motivation and active engagement in
various activities.
In addition to autonomy, SDT highlights the importance of competence. According to the
theory, individuals are motivated when they perceive themselves as competent or effective in their
actions. This sense of competence not only enhances motivation but also plays a role in sustaining
effort and persistence.
Furthermore, SDT underscores the significance of relatedness. The theory acknowledges that
social connections and relationships are fundamental to human motivation. Feeling connected to
others promotes overall well-being and sustains engagement in various activities.
By examining how students’ autonomy, competence, and relatedness within both sports and
academics influence their motivation, SDT can provide insights into the psychological factors at play.
Understanding these dynamics enhances the study’s ability to uncover the nuanced relationships
between sports participation and academic performance, contributing to a more holistic understanding
of the school community’s dynamics.

Figure 1. The Conceptual Framework of the Study
As shown in Figure 1 above, the Study's Conceptual Framework shows the relationship
between the different variables included in our study. It shows that students’ Sports Participation, the
Independent Variable, directly impacts the Dependent Variable, which is their Academic
Performance..
The other variables, such as the Moderator or the Moderating variables, are the following: (1)
Prior Academic Achievements of the student-athletes, (2) the type of Sports they participating, (3)
Parental Support, and (4) the different School Policies.. These variables can strengthen the impact of
6
Sports Participation on the Academic Performance of the students at Arteche National High School.
Meanwhile, the following variables: (1) Time Management of the student-athletes, (2) their Intrinsic
Motivation, and (3) their Mental Health are the Mediating Variables. These variables can also affect
the relationship of Sports Participation to the Academic Performance of student-athletes in Arteche
National High School.
By seeing the relationship of different variables through the conceptual Framework, the
researchers believe that Sports Participation can cause a significant impact to the Academic
Performance students of Arteche National High School.
