CHAPTER 1
INTRODUCTION

A. Background of the Study

Stress Level is not to eliminate stress but to learn how to manage it and how to use
it to help us. Insufficient stress acts as a depressant and may leave us feeling bored or
dejected; on the other hand, excessive stress may leave us feeling "tied up in knots." What
we need to do is find the optimal level of stress which will individually motivate but not
overwhelm each of us. Stress management can be defined as interventions designed to
reduce the impact of stress in the work place. These can have an individual focus, aimed
at increasing an individual’s ability to cope with stress and health. We know that stress is a
fact of life and some stress can have a positive impact, however, the high stress levels that
many people report experiencing can have long-term health consequences, ranging from
fatigue to obesity and heart disease.

Meanwhile, at Tacurong National High School, particularly in Information and

Communications Technology strand, It was presented that the greatest number of students
problem that caused stressed was found in areas of personal adjustments, school life, and
the financial status. Senior High School students were facing academic, social, and other
stresses such as finances and how to cope with them. The common stress most Senior
High School students face is the stress from the work load that is common in a higher
education system.

This is the major challenge, and you will be facing without the close guidance you
may have previously enjoyed from a teacher or parent; social stress seems to be more
prominent with underclassmen leaving home and their support structure from home but
can affect any Senior Highschool students. Most students find that the number one cause
of stress for them is financially trying to juggle a full load, and work full time to support
themselves and for other students pay for school.
Furthermore, in Sultan Kudarat, Philippines, particularly in Tacurong City, many
students are so much affected by stress. Although students are in different Senior High
School strands, they encounter almost all the same problems and all of them experience

02

different stress levels. Yet, there are speculations and perceptions that there are groups
which are more prone to stress. Information and Communications Technology students
are well-known for their hectic schedules. They, more often than not, are the students at
Tacurong National High School that have so many things to do. However, some of them
do not even know that they are already stressed-out. Information and Communications
Technology students start taking up their subjects on their second semester.

It is during this time that they are given much more workload with an aid of the
above mentioned statements wherein problems and significance of stress level among the
numerous groups of individuals, the researchers therefore conducted a study of
concerning stress level which was contextualized among the Information and
Communications Technology students of Tacurong National High School. The result of the
study served them as a sound basis for a particular intervention scheme regarding this
matter.

A. Purpose of the Study

CHAPTER 2

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE

This chapter primarily presents the different researches and other literatures, which
have significant bearings on the variables included in the research. It focuses on several
aspects that will help in the development of this study. The study is generally concentrating
on the determining the levels of stress of Information and Communications Technology
students in Tacurong National High School. The literatures of this study came from books,
journals, articles, and other existing theses and dissertations to be useful in the
advancement of awareness concerning the study.

As stated by Reddy et al. (2018) in their study concludes that stream wise difference
in stress does exist in students. It is important to deal with stress at personal, social and
institutional level. To identify the main reason of stress is the key to deal with it.
Professionals can develop tailor made strategies to deal with stress. The integrated well
being of the students is important not only for the individual but for the institute as well.

Meanwhile, Dimitrov (2017) in his study claimed that stress can be addressed by
ensuring that the students give utmost importance to their welfare. Food, exercise, work,
recreation are some of the areas to focus on. He also concluded that the education system
is more to do with the academic qualifications and does not contribute enough to the
holistic development of students. But according to Subramani and Kadhiravan (2017) they
revealed the link between academic stress and mental health among students. He
endorsed that academic stress and mental health are correlated and that students are
cramped with the academic structure. Parents and schools pressurize the students way
too much for the higher grades that disheartens the students, further to add on there is not
enough support from the parents and school in terms of guidance.
In consonance with Igoe (2017), he highly emphasized emotional preparedness as
the skills to develop his full potential in college and beyond. But for Van Rooij (2018)
emphasizes that cognitive strategies are the ways of thinking and working required in

05
postsecondary learning environment, content knowledge refers to the core subjects’
knowledge and skills, learning skills and techniques consist of academic behaviors and
beliefs and transition knowledge and skills refer to the information and skills to start a
degree.

In conclusion, Stress is a feeling of emotional or physical tension. Stress is something that

affects many people each and every day. Life is full of hassles, deadlines, frustrations, and
demands. For some people, stress is so common, it is a way of life. Stress can be very
harmful and or helpful. It could help motivate you to meet a deadline and perform a task
under pressure. Stress can also be very harmful, such as memory problems, moodiness,
aches and pains, and eating more or less.

Conceptual Framework

This conceptual framework shows the independent and dependent variables of the
study. It is reported that the main reason why the academic performance of Accountancy,
Business, and Management students is negatively affected, ranging from high to low
scores.

Independent Variable Dependent Variable

Academic
Stress Level Performance
Figure 1. The schematic diagram of the Independent and Dependent Variables of the
Study.

The current study examined that majority of students are facing stress. The results
also explore that physical and psychological stress have negative effects on academic
achievement of students. It has been found that student's mental health has an impact on
their academic performance. Stress affects both students’ physical and mental health

06

functioning. Stress can also reduce motivation, and hinder academic achievement. These
negative symptoms could affect the quality of students’ academic performance.

Definition of terms

The following terms are further defined conceptually:

Information and Communications Technology students. These are the grouped

of respondents that are chosen by the researchers.

Stress. Is how we react when we feel under pressure or threatened. It usually

happens when we are in a situation that we don't feel we can manage or control.

Stress Level. Can be defined as any type of change that causes physical,
emotional or psychological strain. Stress is your body's response to anything that requires
attention or action.

they or individual as a voluntary. The purpose of sampling is use some of individual to get
information about population. Sampling is the way to take sample. In this study, the
researcher used purposive sampling to obtain the sample. purposive sampling is the
process of selecting sample by taking subject that is not based on the level or area, but it is
taken based on the specific purpose.

3.6 RESEARCH INSTRUMENT

Research Instrument has important functions in this research. Instrument is one of
the significant steps in conducting this research. Therefore, the researcher must choose an
instrument in the process of collecting data. Research instrument is tool of collecting data
that should be valid and reliable. The research instrument for this study will be conducted
in a form of surveys. Surveys are research methods used for collecting data from a
predefined group of respondents to gain information and insights into various topics of
interest. They can have multiple purposes, and researchers can conduct them in many
ways depending on the methodology chosen and the study's goal.

3.7 STATISTICAL TREATMENT

Rate Level of Stress Definition
40 - 50 Extreme Level of Stress This means that academic
stress is always observed.
30 - 40 High Level of Stress This means that academic
stress is oftentimes
observed.
20 - 30 Moderate Level of Stress This means that academic
stress is occasionally
observed.
10 - 20 Low Level of Stress This means that academic
stress is rarely observed.
1 - 10 Never been Stress This means that academic
stress is not observed.

09
As soon as the researchers gathered the data, they will be compiled, sorted, and
organized. They will be subjected to statistical treatment in order to answer the questions

and Its Effects on their Academic Performance.

5.2 SUMMARY OF FINDINGS

Base on the results gathered from the data on the profile of the respondents, in
terms of gender, there was a total of 30 respondents that represents the whole Grade 12 –
Information and Communications Technology Strand. Majority of the students were
females with 17 or 57% of the total sample, while there were 13 or 43% male respondents
oof the total sample. With exception of the statements, “Parents or problems at home,”
“Difficulties with romantic relationships,” “Has trouble interacting with others,” “Pressure
from other people,” and Afraid because of too much competition in getting good grades.”
all factors are classified as high. The result from “Studying for upcoming examinations” got
the highest weighted mean of 4, which means that the stress level of Information and
Communications Technology ranges up when they review for their exams.

5.3 RESEARCH ANALYSIS

The research on Stress Level of Grade 12 – Information and Communications

Technology Students of Tacurong National High School and Its Effects on their Academic
Performance with its 30 randomly selected respondents, presents the following analyzed
data:

14

a. Examination is a huge factor for a great body of respondents, accumulating

over 50% of the total population of respondents that answered 5 on the rating
scale, and with the rest of the respondents garnering to an average to high
amount of stress levels.
b. Time manage is also a struggle for most of the respondents population, the
table is divided almost equally in top part of the rating scale and shows that it is
a high to extreme source for stress.
c. . Adjustments of students in a new environment is also likely to be a high to
extreme source of stress with only an average 2 respondents out of 3 that
answered no stress gained from adjustments to environmental factors.
d. Parental or family problems is also presented to be a source of stress, but
unlike the other factors, there are some in the total population of respondents,
that are less likely to be dealing with stress caused by this factor.
e. Romantic relationships is presented in the data to be less likely to cause stress
garnering to an low to average rating, which is likely that romantic relationship
too, has low to average effect in their academic performance.
f. Demands of the family with studying is likely to be as stressful as to like having
an examination for the huge body of respondents garnering to a high to
extreme amount of stress accumulated.
g. The fear of students not being able to attain a goal at hand is also an extreme
source of their stress.
h. Peer pressure to the stress level is evenly distributed in the rating scale, which
shows that it is likely to have different effects on the different environment of
people the respondents are in.
i. Stress obtained from fear of having too much competition in getting good
grades differ evenly as the table 10 shows, it is likely that different experience
and capabilities is a factor to the stress gain.
j. Trouble in interaction is not as high in the rating scale if compared to the other
tables data, but the table still shows that it is still garnering a high amount of
stress of a great body of the respondents.

15

5.4 RESEARCH RECOMMENDATIONS

This study revealed Stress Level of Grade 12 – Information and Communications

Technology Students of Tacurong National High School and Its Effects on their Academic
Performance. Thus, the following recommendations are hereby presented:

1. With the proven data presented, it should be brought to the attention of teachers and
faculties that assessing each student’s weakness like time management should be
prioritized in the process of nurturing these students.

2. Implementation of talks and guidance counseling should be also a part of the strategy of
teachers in maintaining the welfare of their students. Talks and counseling that not only
requires the presence of the students but also with their parents too further involve the
parents and enlighten them the struggles of their children. It is to promote the process of
nurturing a student’s stress management skill and for the guidance for the parent’s to what
extend should they be involved with their children’s academic life.

3. It is also brought to the attention that, examination is a huge part of the stress causing
factor. It should be brought to the attention of teachers to further asses on how they should
execute or how should they implement their examination to a reasonable extent without
overloading the capacity of a student’s intellectual capability and also not compromising
their own goal in teaching.

4. Lastly, the data presented shows that peer pressure or the companions a student
surrounds himself with is a factor in the high stress level that in-turn affects a student’s
academic performance. With the combine power of teachers and parents, students should
be educated or guided on how they should value themselves and how they should interpret
that value to better guide them on what kind of people to surround themselves that will
promote and produce good outcome in their academic life.
