CHAPTER 1
1. GENERAL
The model RX steam turbine is a vertical Curtis
single stage with a reduction gear unit
Its construction is simple, strong and compact and
the ‘safety device and the governing device are
‘composed of simple mechanism,
2. EXHAUST CASING
‘The exhaust casing is solid construction with an
axial flow exhaust steam bore to lead steam flow
Smoothly to the exhaust steam piping for saving
steam consumption,
3. ROTOR DISC
‘The rotor disc is provided on the turbine shaft end
by shrinkage fit. The pinion and shaft are solid
construction and teeth faces are grinded or shaved
Jn order to operate in good efficiency and silently.
‘The outer circumference of rotor disc is provided
With blads in two raws, and shroud rings are pro
Vided on the blads to prevent steam leakage
Fig. 1.1
CONSTRUCTION
4. GOVERNOR VALVE
The governor valve is double seat type to prevent
unbalance by the effect of steam pressure and also
Acts as an emergency stop valve so that this valve
closses to stop the turbine when emergency trip
devices work,
5. GLAND SEAL
The turbine gland is provided with labyrinth pack-
ing,

CHAPTER 2 CAUTION FOR INSTALLATION AND PIPING
1 BLACE OF INSTALLATION & FOUNDATION
(D ‘Size ofthe place of installation must be shoo
(2) The foundation must be strong enough to absorb
Mibration of the turbine and to resist deformation
against long use,
2 AINISHING OF TURBINE MOUNTING seAT

3. PIPING
pafermation given to the turbine by outside force
ue £9 incorrect piping causes not only bree,

‘must be considered,
(2) Matching piping ages to turbine anges,
(©) Fitting support to bear piping dead went,
(©) Avoiding effect of thermal expansion oe ipings,
(4) Prevention of drain in pipings to turbine
3.1 Matching pipe anges to turbine flanges
The pipe anges connecting with the steam inlet
and exhaust flanges of the turbine must be oo,
rectly matched,
3.2 Fitting support and hanger
Rrovide supports and hangers to bea piping dead
tea 20 that no bad effect caused by the piping
‘dead weight will be given to the turbine

0 much steam as to start the turbine,
Unless pulling the starting lever, if fitted, the
sovemor does not function and the govemor
valve remains closed. Moreover, unless L.O. pre-
ssure is above 0.3 kylom®g by operating the
priming L.O. pump, the L.O. interlock acts and
the governor valve can not be opened.
2. STARTING
(®) Open the steam inlet valve gradually and start
the turbine. Then keep its speed at 100 to 200
pm to warm up the turbine for 25 minutes,
@) During that time check if there is no abnormal
nolse or vibration in the turbine and the redu-
ction gear,
In case any abnormal state is felt, stop the
turbine immediately and trace the cause.
) Close each drain valve on making sure that the
drain has been completely discharged fiom
each portion,
(@ Trip the turbine by operating the hand trip
knob to confirm that the governor valve closes
immediately.
(S) After sufficient warm up, open the steam inlet
valve further and gradually and raise the speed
4p to the rated revolutions in about S minutes,
(©) When the governor is used for the first time,
draw out air in the govemor oil by opening
the needle valve on the governor and adjust
the needle valve as described in the manual
of Woodward Governor, :
Confirm if the emergency trip mechanism
actuates surely always at the time of starting,
Also at the first operation after inspection ot
long standstill, confirm the actuation of over-
speed trip at the specified speed.
©
(8) then testing the overspeed trip for the turbine,
the punp must be disconnected and the test must
be to the turbine only in order to avoid dry cu
‘ing of mechanical seal fitted on the pusp,
3. OPERATION AT VARIOUS SPEEDS
(1) For remote control
In the control room, operate the speed control
switch,
For speed increase, turn the switch clockwise,
and vice versa,
(2) Forlocal control
For speed increase, tum the manual adjusting
knob clockwise, and vice versa,
ee
C J
see4. STOPPING
(1) Decrease the turbine speed gradually.
(2) Close the steam inlet valve,
Also stopping is possible when the remote stop
or the hand trip on the turbine is actuated.
(G) When: speed decreases and oil pressure fills
below 0.45 kglem*g the priming L.O. pump
Starts automatically, keeping oil pressure above
0.3 kg/em?g,
(4) Stop the cooling water to the LO. cooler,
(5) When the turbine has stopped, close the exhaust
valve and open all drain valves on the turbine to
discharge drain completely,
(6) Keep the priming 1.0. pump is in operation
for more than 5 minutes after stopping the
turbine. After stopping the priming L.O. pump,
confirm that the turbine bearing temperature
does not rise above 80°C.

8. EMERGENCY STOPPING
(1) Local stopping
Push the hand trip knob provided on the trip
casing on thé reduction grear casing so that.
the spindle moves downward and the governor
valve closes through actuation of the trip me-
chanism and the turbine stops as shown in Fig,
3.1 and 3.2,
(2) Remote stopping
Push the remote stop switch provided in the
emote control room so that the trip mechanism,
actuates to close the governor valve to stop the
turbine as shown in Fig, 3.1 and 3.2.
6, RESETTING OF EMERGENCY TRIP.
Before resetting emergency trip, be sure to make
the following conditions.
(@) The driven machine is at the minimum load,
eg. the pump discharge valve is fully closed.
(b) The governor speed setting is at the minimum
speed.
(©) The turbine steam inlet valve is fully closed

As all parts of the turbine have been adjusted at
the shop toa, it i important to avoid unnecessary
readjustment.
However, if readjustment is required proceed as

However, the adjustment of the interior is
Very complicated and, therefore, must be done
