Problem Solving

This document provides an example of how integral calculus can be applied to real-life situations by calculating the area bounded by curves. Specifically: 1) It explains that integral calculus allows engineers to calculate complex areas bounded by curves like parabolas and hyperbolas. 2) It gives the formula to calculate the area between two curves f(x) and g(x) from limits a to b. 3) It works through an example problem, calculating the area between the curves f(x)=x^2 and g(x)=2x-x^2 from 0 to 1, and obtaining the answer of 1/3 square units.

Answers are in the following explanations

Explanation:
Solution:
a.) Example and explanation.

One of the main functions and purpose of Integral calculus is being able to measure the area bounded by the curves
(either single curves or two or more), this type of computation allows engineers to calculate complex areas such as
parabolic bounded by straight lines, two parabolas, hyperbolas, ellipses and many other types of lines of geometry that
requires effort to calculate. This is where we can use the application of Integral calculus bounded by the curves. The area
under the curve can be represented as the equation below where the f(x) is always the upper curve and g(x) is the lower
curve where we can take the area of that two specific curves from whatever limits we want (a to b).

b
A = ∫a [f(x) − g(x)] dx

b.) Example computation .

We have already covered the notion of calculating the area bounded by the curves f(x) and g(x). Now, lets take the
following example so we were able to solve problems with regards to area bounded by the curves.

2
f(x) = x
g(x) = 2x − x2

Required:
Area between two curves.

Solution:
The area between two curves can be visualized using graphing calculator, the shaded region is the area we would like to
compute in this example with limits from 0 to 1.

b
A = ∫a [f(x) − g(x)] dx

1
A = ∫0 [(2x − x2 ) − x2 ] dx

1
A = ∫0 2x − 2x2 dx

1 1
A = ∫0 2x dx − ∫0 2x2 dx

2
A=1− 3

1
A= 3  sq. units ⇐ Answer
