WHAT IS
PATINTERO?
PATINTERO

- Also known as "harangang-taga" or "harang taga"
- Played by two teams with equal members in each
team
- Runners or players (Bangon)
- Taggers or defenders (Taya or "It")
HISTORY AND
BACKGROUND
HISTORY & BACKGROUND
- Patintero is derived from the Spanish word "tinte" which means "tint" or "ink" in
reference to the drawn lines.
- Tubigan, Tubiganay, Tubig-Tubig, or "Water Game" (because water is used to
mark the grid lines on soft earth)
• Lumplumpas - Igorot
• Sabatan - Kapampangan
• Sinibon or Serbab - Ilokano
• Tadlas (for four players) or birus-birus (for six players) - Eastern Visaya
- The objective of the game is to block (harang) the players from the opposing team
from passing.
- Hand-eye coordination and strategic thinking.
HOW TO PLAY
PATINTERO
- The game starts with picking the tagger and members by rock–paper–
scissors or a coin toss.
- Two teams (Taggers and Runners) are needed usually with around 6 players.
- The objective of the game is to cross the rectangle back and forth without
getting tagged.
-One tagger is usually assigned per crosswise line.
-Taggers can only move along their respective lines, except to the tagger on the first line who
is the team leader (patotot).
- The patotot can also move along the central lengthwise line.
- Runners can cross at any time and to any adjacent square.
- They can only exit the playing rectangle at both ends of the rectangle.
- Teams score points when they
complete isang gabi ("one night"), a full circuit of the playing rectangle, from one end to the
other and back again.
- Once all the runners have been tagged, the teams reverse roles, with the taggers now
becoming the runners and vice versa.
