New Perspectives on Global Diasporas: Memory, Disability, and


Marginality
Concept Note:

Exploring the intricate nexus of memory, disability, and diaspora unveils a compelling yet
underexplored terrain that profoundly influences identity formation, resilience, and community
dynamics in transnational landscapes. Memories, particularly those stemming from traumatic
events leading to diaspora, serve as pivotal agents in shaping the identities and lived
experiences of diasporic communities. Concurrently, disability within these contexts assumes
unique connotations and expressions, heavily influenced by health and socio-cultural factors.
This interdisciplinary exploration seeks to contribute to broader discourses on inclusivity,
multiculturalism, and social justice in an increasingly interconnected world. We invite
scholarly contributions that examine the multifaceted encounters of memory, disability, and
marginality within global diaspora contexts from both Humanities and Social Sciences.
Echoing Tobin Siebers’ assertion that “the disabled body and mind always elicit powerful
emotions” (Disability Aesthetics 10), authors are encouraged to unravel the affective
dimensions of disability encounters in global diasporic communities, analyzing their impact on
memories, identities, and social dynamics. We welcome submissions for the forthcoming
anthology on the following themes:

• Memory, Migration, Displacement, Diaspora and Resettlement


• Disability, Migration and Diaspora
• Marginality, Migration, and Diaspora
• Intergenerational transmission of trauma and resilience among disabled diaspora
populations
• Cultural and historical perspectives on memory and disability within diasporic
communities
• The intersectionality of disability, race, gender, and class in diasporic memories
• Representations of memory and disability in diasporic literature, art, and media
• Methodological approaches to studying memory and disability in global diaspora
contexts
• Theoretical frameworks for comprehending memory and disability within diaspora
studies
• Historical examinations of disabled migration
• Cultural representations of memory and disability experiences in global diasporic
literature, film, and media.
• Any other relevant theme

Timeline of Submission:

Abstract Submission Deadline: April 30th, 2024

Notification of Acceptance: May 20th, 2024

Full Chapter Submission Deadline: October 15th, 2024

Notification of Full Chapter Acceptance: December 20th, 2024

Submission Guideline and Process:

Interested scholars/contributors are requested to submit an abstract of 300-500 words, along


with a brief bio-note, to cfpglobaldiaspora@[Link] with the subject line “Submission:
Memory and Disability in Global Diaspora.” Each submission will undergo a rigorous peer-
review process. The edited volume is going to be published as a part of the Routledge Book
Series titled “The Global Indian Diasporas in 21st Century: Interdisciplinary Perspectives” by
Professor S Irudaya Rajan and Dr. Sajaudeen Chapparban, Assistant Professor of Diaspora
Studies, Central University of Gujarat, India.
