purposes to develop a good paragraph. If you understand the lesson, identifying words or
group of words will be easy and enjoyable.
Preparing you for the actitivies in this module, you need to understand deeply the
concepts of phrases, clauses and sentences: its kinds, uses and purposes. Let’s try now!
Enjoy the adventure and excitement in this learning journey.

What’s In

To understand fully the new lesson, you need to recall some lessons in the past. Let
us talk about the terms and definitions of phrases, clauses and sentences. Examples of
phrases, clauses, and sentences are given to help you remember the concepts.
A. PHRASE
A phrase is a group of related words that does not have subject and a predicate. A
phrase performs the function of a single part of speech. It can be found at the beginning,
middle or end of a sentence. A phrase may not contain a subject or a verb or both. Thus, a
phrase may have meaning but it does not convey a complete thought.
Examples:
1. The employees are tired, miserable and hungry.
2. The adjective phrases are tired, miserable and hungry modifying employees.
3. Beyond the field, a river flowed to the sea.
The adverb phrase beyond the field modifies the verb flowed.

Directions: Underline the phrase and draw an arrow to the word it modifies.

______2. The doctor from the city asked the patient.

______3. The car over the bridge is mine.

______4. The child fell into the river.

What makes a sentence complete in thought or idea? Of course, with the use of phrases and
clauses mentioned above.

5
Examples:

1. I prepare my study corner in our house because face to face learning is not
allowed yet.

clause phrase clause

2. Before going outside, be sure to wear your face mask.

Knowing phrases and clauses lead you to understand how to put them together to form

What is it

Aside from knowing the definition of Phrases, Clauses and Sentences, it is better to
familiarize yourself with its kind, types, and purposes. This will help you develop a deeper
awareness in categorizing group of words and later you can use them in expressing your
thoughts.

A. TYPES OF PHRASE

ADJECTIVE PHRASE
An adjective phrase, also called an adjectival phrase is a group of related words in
which the main word is an adjective and which functions like an adjective in sentence or
clause.
Examples:
1. The story was not too terrible.
The adjective phrase not too terrible modifying story.

2. This sack of rice is the heaviest of all.

The adjective phrase heaviest of all modifying sack of rice.

ADVERB PHRASE
An adverb phrase also called an adverbial phrase or adverbial, is a group of related
words in which the main word is an adverb and which functions like an adverb in a
sentence or clause.

7
Examples:
1. They live very close.
The adverb phrase very close modifying live.

2. The students are working really hard.

The adverb phrase really hard modifying working.

B. KINDS OF CLAUSE

INDEPENDENT OR MAIN CLAUSE

An independent or main clause can stand by itself. It is a group of words that
contains a subject and verb and expresses a complete thought.
Examples:
1. The designer released her new designs of apparels.
2. Zeah received a lovely bouquet of rose.

DEPENDENT OR SUBORDINATE CLAUSE

A dependent clause (also called a subordinate clause) is a group of words that
contains a subject and verb but does not express a complete thought. Therefore, a
dependent clause is not a complete sentence on its own. It is dependent fo being attached
to independent clause to form a sentence. Typically, a dependent clause is made
dependent due to certain words or phrases that modify the sentence to be incomplete.
These words or phrases include the subordinating clause.
Examples:
1. Which inspired me to write a story.
2. Because she is an excellent newscaster

In the first example, the subordinating conjunction which was placed before
inspired me to write a story creates a word group – which inspired me to write a story –
that cannot stand alone as a main clause. Although the clause has a subject and a
predicate, it does not express a complete thought. In the second example, the
subordinating conjunction because introduced the dependent clause. Though the clause
has a subject and a predicate, because she is an excellent newscaster cannot, however,
stand alone.

NOTE:
Subordinating conjunctions introduce dependent clauses and connect them to
independent clauses.
Dependent clauses are introduced by subordinating conjunctions such as
although, even though, if, as if, who, until, whether, whose, unless, that, while,
before, since, however, whenever, because, whom and which.

8
If a clause begins with one of these words, it is dependent and needs to be attached
to an independent clause.
Dependent clauses joined with independent clauses.

Independent clause Dependent clause

1. Everyone commended the artist because of his excellent performance.

Dependent clause Independent clause

2. Because of the compliments she heard, Sheena was encouraged to present

their output in class.

Independent clause Dependent clause

3. It is a great spot where one can enjoy a picture-perfect scenery.

C. DIFFERENT PURPOSES OF A SENTENCE

If phrases and clauses have their own kinds, a sentence has also different purposes.
Before we express our own self through sentences, we should know our aim or intention to
deliver clearly what we convey. A sentence has three different purposes. These are stating
a fact (real/true), making a point (opinion/personal belief) and stating an idea (thought).
These kinds of sentences are called declarative sentences. And we end a declarative
sentence in a period.
Example of Declarative Sentence with stating different purposes:
1. Corona virus is a pandemic outbreak disease. (Stating Fact)
2. It’s sad to know that Filipinos suffered a lot to this pandemic. (Making a Point)
3. Maybe we should always obey the advice of health expert to avoid sickness
(Stating Idea)

NOTE:
Do not be confused in identifying Idea and Opinion. Remember, an Idea is a mental
concept. It may be true or false or even totally impossible. An Opinion is a person’s reaction
to an idea, expressed in terms of approve / disapprove. Take a look on this example:
“I have an idea that all family members should undergo a Rapid Diagnostic Test (RDT)
on COVID-19. Now tell me your opinion, what do you feel about my idea?”
Let’s check your understanding about phrase, clause, and sentence by organizing
them. Fill in the empty boxes with correct answers to complete the graphic organizer.

PHRASE 2. SENTENCE

Adjective 3. Fact

1. Dependent 4.

5.
