Detailed Lesson Plan in Mathematics 6

by Ma. Julie C. Enciso

I. Learning Objectives:
At the end of the period, the pupils are expected to:
a. Define rectangular prism.
b. Derive the formula for the volume of rectangular prism.
c. Solve the given volume of rectangular prism.

II. Learning Content:

a. Topic: Derive the formula for the volume of rectangular prism
b. Reference: Mathematics 4 pg. 283
c. Materials: Tarpapel, rubik’s cube, manila paper, pictures, marker, rectangular box
d. Values Integration: Cooperation

III. Learning Procedure: Inductive Method

Teacher’s Activity Pupil’s Activity

A. Preliminary Activity

1. Prayer
Before we start, Anna kindly lead
the prayer.
“Our Father . . . . . … Amen.”
2. Greetings
Good morning class!!
“Good morning Teacher.”
Before you take your seat please pick
all the litters and pieces of paper under
your chair and arrange your chair
properly.

You may now take your seat.

“Thank you, Teacher.”
3. Checking of Attendance

Whose absent today Roy?

“There are no absent today”
Before we start our lesson let me
introduce you the rules, during our
discussion.
 One mouth at a time.
 I have here different color of
sticky note.
Group 1 (Yellow)
Group 2 (yellow green)
Group 3 (Pink)
Group 4 (blue)
You only have 5 lives, if the group break
my rules. I will remove 1 life.

I will assign everyone a number, so if I

call the number, you are going to
answer the question I will ask.
The group with more lives left will
receive a prize.

B. Review
Who among you remember the formula
on how to get the Area of a rectangle?
Number 8?
Area = Length x Width
Very good!
I have here a shape of a rectangle.
Can you find the Area of the rectangle?
Number 2.

5 cm

12 cm Area = Length x Width

Area = 12 cm x 5 cm
= 70 cm2
Therefore, the area of the rectangle is 70 cm.

Very good!

C. Motivation
Class have you ever played a puzzle? Yes teacher!

I have 4 sets of puzzle here. Each group will

be given one set of it. Form the puzzle as
fast as you can. And guess, what is it all
about.

(Remember that you should work as a

group or team. The noisy group/s will be
disqualified to our game)

What do you call the object you have A rubik’s cube.

formed?

That’s right! A rubik’s cube is 3 x 3 x 3 cube

that can be manipulated so that each face
of cube will have the same design. I have
here a real rubik’s cube.

Do you know how to play it? Yes teacher!

How?

How many small cubes does this rubik’s (pupils may give an estimate or give exact
cube have? answer.)

D. Development Activities
1. Presentation
The number of small cubes that make
up rubik’s cube is 27.
Now class I have here a rectangular
box.
What kind of solid figure is this? Rectangular prism.

Today we will derive the formula for

the volume of rectangular prism.

2. Discussion

First, look the things inside your bag an

example of rectangular prism (pupils looking at their bag)

Raise what you get.

Very good! Those are example of
rectangular prism.

Can you please read number 26, what is

a rectangular prism? Rectangular prism is a solid figure that has six
faces, eight vertices and twelve edges.

Where are the faces? Here teacher.

Good
What about the vertices or vertex? Here teacher.

Good! What is a vertex number 16? Vertex is the corner of a shape.

Good! Where are the edges? Here teacher.

Good! What is an edge number 27?

Edge is a segment where two faces of a prism
meet
Good!

Now, we will know what is volume?

Anyone? Volume is the amount of space inside the
prism.

Very good!
For example, this rubik’s cube, the
number of small cubes that make up
rubik’s cube is 27, because it holds
exactly 27 cubes.

Volume is measured in cubic units,

which means it tells you how many
cubes of a given size it takes to fill the
prism

What do you think we need to measure

if we need to find the volume of a
rectangular prism? Height

That’s right!
Not only length and width, the
rectangular prism have.
It also has a height. We also need to
measure the height of the rectangular
prism.

If the formula of the area of a rectangle

is Length x Width. What do you think is
the formula of the volume of a
rectangular prism? Volume (v) = Length (l) x width(w) x height (h)

That’s right!
For example, this one, how many rows
of cubes are there? 3

How many columns of cube are there? 2

How many columns of cube are there? 4

Therefore, V = length x width x height

=3x2x4
= 24 units3

For example, this one.

Yes teacher

Volume is the amount of space inside the

V=l x w x h prism.
=7 cm x 7 cm x 1 cm
V= 49cm3 Volume (v) = Length (l) x width(w) x height (h)

Remember: don’t forget to put a label.

Understand class?

E. Generalization
Again, what is volume? Number 22.

What is the volume of rectangular prism? V= l x w x h

=10 cm x 10 cm x 10 cm
I have here another example. Solve the =1000 cm3
volume of the given rectangular prism.

V=lxwxh
= 4cm x 4cm x 6cm
Remember: don’t forget to put a label. = 96cm3

F. Application

I will group you into four groups. All you

have to do is to solve for the volume of the
given rectangular prism for each group.
I will pick who’s group will report first. The
one who will report is the group leader. Yes teacher!

Criteria:
Cooperation and Teamwork 20%
Time management 10%
Neatness and orderliness 20%
Output 50%
Total 100%
You only have 5 mins. to do your activity.

Understand?

Group 1

Group 2
Group 3

(pupils make their activity)

Yes teacher!

Group 4

V= l x w x h
=3mx2mx7m
V = 42 m3

Are you done? V= l x w x h

= 3 m x 3 m x 6m
Everybody go back to your seat. =54 m3
You may paste your work in the blackboard.

The first reporter is group 3

V= l x w x h
=8 cm x 4 cm x 10 cm
= 320 cm3
Very good! Let’s give them a mommy Dionisia clap
Next is group 1
V= l x w x h
= 10 cm x 5 cm x 6 cm
=300 cm3

Very good! Let’s give them a wow clap

Next is group 4

Very good! Let’s give them a lamok clap

Last is group 2

Very good! Let’s give them a tatlong bagsak.

IV. Evaluation

V. Assignment

Complete the table.

Length 15 cm 8.2 dm 5m 2.3 m

Width 9 cm 4.7 dm 2m 6m
Height 7 cm 2.6 dm 4m 9m 2.6 m
