SureBlock-109 Water Control Cement

The document describes SureBlock-109, a selective water control process. It consists of microfine cement, a hydrocarbon carrier, and a surfactant. When it contacts water, it delivers a high strength, low permeability set. It has delayed gelation allowing deeper fracture penetration. The document provides details on slurry design, rheology, strength development and application for shutting off water in natural or hydraulic fractures.

SureBlock-109

• It is a selective Water control Process

• It consists of Microfine cement, a hydrocarbon
carrying fluid such as diesel or Kerosene and
WZZ-109
• WZZ-109 is a surfactant is an organic acid salt
that is used to disperse and increase the Ultrafine cement
concentration of microfine cement contained in a Average Particle size < 6 micron
pumpable hydrocarbon based slurry
• When WFT’s SureBlock-109 cement contacts
with water, it delivers a high compressive strength
and low permeability set cement
• It has the advantage of producing delayed
gelation which allow deeper penetration of the
microfine cement slurry into formation fractures Regular cement
Average Particle size > 100 micron

Design Volume Calculation

For Natural Fractures in carbonate formation

– Start with 8 m3 or 50 bbls of SureBlock-109 Cement
based on surface equipment constraints (WFT batch
mixer with two 50 bbls (8 m3) tanks)
– When pressure increases 80% of fracturing pressure,
stop and overdisplace
– If no pressure increase after 50 bbls, pump another
50 bbls of SureBlock-109 cement again
For hydraulically created fractures
– 50% of fracture volume

SureBlock-109 Cement Slurry Design

1. Prepare 1% WZZ-109 by volume in diesel or kerosene; 10 gals of WZZ-

109 in 1000 gal of desel or kerosene

2. Prepare slurry at the following procedure:

• In 442 gals of diesel or kerosene containing 1% WZZ-109, add 100
sacks (5000 lbs) of Microfine cement
• Slurry density -12.5 lb/gals
• Slurry yield – 0.86 ft3/sack

• Mixing Procedure
• Make sure all pump and equipment are electrically ground
• Measure the correct volume of diesel or kerosene into a batch
mixer or any paddle-type turbine blender or ribbon blender
• Diesel or kerosene should be free of water
• Add the correct volume of WZZ-1090 and mix well
• Slowly begin to add the required amount of microfine cement
• Continue mixing until slurry is uniformly blended

6
Application – to shut off unwanted water in
natural fractured carbonate reservoir
• Slurry remains un-active when contacting oil producing zone
• Once contact with water it remains pumpable for about 20-30
minutes before beginning to set
• When it sets it will yield around 200-300 psi compressive strength
depending on the water contents

General Characteristics

• The wells are shut in due to high water production at

1700-2000 BWPD
• The fractures created in Barnett shale is believed to
connect with Ellenburger formation
• The water is believed to produced from bottom water
zone through the created fractures

9
Objectives and Challenges

Objectives
• Reduce/minimize water production
Challenges
• The precise water entry can not be identified
• The entire lateral length may have to be treated
• Polymer method up to 30,000 ppm has been tried in that area, but
could only partially shut off water

10
Treatment Procedure
1. Run in hole with 1 ½” coiled tubing through 2 3/8” tubing with packer
2. Set the packer 10 ft away from the top of the 1st set of perforations and the coiled tubing end
should be in the middle of perforations.
3. Pump 500 gals of diesel as pre-flush down 1 ½” coiled tubing into the first set of perforated
interval
4. Pump ½ fracture volume of SureBlock-109 cement
5. Displace with diesel
6. Move packer and coiled tubing up to the 2nd set of perforations and repeat 3,4 and 5
7. Shut in well for 24 hours
8. Back flow the well to cleanup unset cement
9. Continue production

11
After Treatment

• When SureBlock-109 Cement contacts with water in the water

zone, the water hydrates the cement and causes the cement to
set to yield compressive strength
• For those SureBlock-109 cement that does not contact with water
will not set during the shut in and will remain as slurry and flow
back with diesel after the treatment
• When the well is put back to production, the SureBlock-109
cement will stop the water to flow into the well, but the fractures
without cement will allow the gas to continue to flow into the well

SPE 113700

Solving Excess Water Production in a Prolific Long Horizontal Open Hole

Drilled in a Naturally Fractured Carbonate Reservoir

• Oil Well in South Italy field with high producing wells from a naturally fractured
carbonate reservoir – about 3500 m; fracture system in contact with the underlying
water drive
• High excessive water >65% and loss of production, water production after a
stimulation job to remove asphaltene in the wellbore
• Open hole interval of 938 m (from 3757-4696 m MD)
• Log shows water from 45 m (4330 to 4375 m MD)
• Can not isolate the zone

Treat ment volume- 2 stages of 10 m3 Oil based microfine cement slurry

Result – Water cut was reduced from 53% to 23% after 14 months the
water increased to 40%
