The Green Turtle’s Habitat
Raine Island is a small island in
the Great Barrier Reef in Australia.
The island has got the largest
population of green turtles in the
world. With warm water and a wide
sandy beach, it’s usually a perfect place
for the turtles.
Every year, more than 18,000 turtles return to Raine Island
to lay their eggs in the sand on the beach. When the baby
turtles are ready, they walk across the beach into the
ocean. But now the turtles have got a problem. The water
level of the ocean is higher than ever before, so salt water
covers the eggs and the babies don’t grow. The
Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service started a project to
help the green turtles. They are putting more sand on the
beach to make it higher than the ocean. So far, their idea is
working and smaller numbers of turtles are dying.
