On 13 April 2024, Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps, (IRGC) in
coordination with the Popular Mobilization Forces,[17] Hezbollah and
the Houthis,[1][2] launched attacks on Israel codenamed Operation True
Promise[18] (Persian: وعده صادق, romanized: va'de-ye sadeq)
[19] using drones, cruise and ballistic missiles.[8] The attacks were launched in
response to the Israeli bombing of the Iranian embassy in Damascus on 1
April.[20] This is the first direct military confrontation between the two countries
since the beginning of the Iran–Israel conflict.
As of 14 April, Iran's envoy to the United Nations said that the attacks "can be
deemed concluded."[21] The Israel Defense Forces claimed that most Iranian
projectiles were intercepted with at least one severe and 31 minor injuries.
[22] The United States, United Kingdom and Jordan assisted Israel by using
their own air forces to intercept Iranian projectiles[23][24] while France deployed
its navy.[25]
Background
Main articles: Israel–Hamas war, Israel–Hezbollah conflict (2023–present),
and Israeli bombing of the Iranian embassy in Damascus
On 7 October 2023, Hamas, a militant organization with support from Iran,
carried out an attack in southern Israel, resulting in the deaths of 1,200
individuals.[26] Israel responded by launching the ongoing Israeli invasion of
the Gaza Strip, which has resulted in the deaths of more than 33,000 people
so far, during which Iran has accused Israel of committing genocide against
the Palestinians of Gaza.[27][28]

SPILLOVER OF THE ISRAEL–
HAMAS WAR
After 7 October, the Iranian-backed
proxy Hezbollah in Lebanon began attacking northern Israel.[29] There have
been over 4,400 violent incidents recorded between Hezbollah and Israel
since the start of the war,[30] and approximately 100,000 Israelis have been
evacuated from northern Israel since the beginning of the conflict.[31]
On 1 April 2024, the Iranian consulate annex building adjacent to the Iranian
embassy in Damascus, Syria, was struck by an Israeli airstrike, killing 16
people, including Brigadier General Mohammad Reza Zahedi, a senior Quds
Force commander of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), and
seven other IRGC officers. Soon after the attack, Iran vowed revenge,[32] with
reports suggesting this as a potential motive for the airstrike.[33] Iran claimed
the building was part of the embassy compound, while Israel maintained it
was a building used by the Iranian Revolutionary Guard and located outside
the fenced compound of the embassy.[34][35] Many countries and international
organizations condemned the attack. The United States denied involvement
or prior knowledge.[36]
In the weeks preceding the attack, the United States, France, Germany and
the United Kingdom all warned Iran not to attack Israel, and claimed that such
an attack would be a major escalation and could lead to a military response
by the West against Iran.[37][38][39] Iran was warned by Israel that such an
attack could lead to a direct Israeli military response on Iranian soil.[40] Saudi
Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Oman, and Kuwait have reportedly[according to
whom?] taken steps to prevent the US from using its bases in their territories for
a possible attack against Iran.[41][42] Iran threatened to attack United States
military bases if it intervened and defended Israel in early April 2024.[43][44]
Events
13 April
Iran launched a drone and missile attack targetting Israel on the evening of 13
April 2024.[45][46] The attack consisted of 'dozens of drones' according to Israeli
and US officials[45][47][48][49] and several ballistic missiles according to Iranian
news agency IRNA. Israeli officials estimated that around 100 drones were
launched,[50] while a US official predicted that 400 to 500 drones and missiles
would be launched from Iraq, Syria, Lebanon, and Yemen, though the
majority would be from Iran.[51] The presence of missiles was possible.[8]
[52] While the attack was in progress, ABC News reported that Israel said that
only military sites had been targeted.[53]
Some of the released videos indicated the use of Shahed 136 drones.[54]
American and British warplanes shot down an unspecified number of Iranian
drones, according to American officials and Israeli Channel 12.[55]
The Wall Street Journal, citing anonymous French officials, reported that
France was deploying naval assets to assist Israel.[7]
14 April
Hezbollah said it launched dozens of Grad rockets at an Israeli air defense
site in the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights. The group said the attack took
place shortly after midnight local time.[2]
At around 2:00 am local time, explosions were heard in Jerusalem, while air
raid sirens sounded across Israel, the West Bank, and the Dead Sea. It is
unknown whether the explosions were interceptions by the Iron Dome or
missile strikes.[56] Tel Aviv and Dimona, which is home to a nuclear facility,
were also targeted.[57] A 10-year-old Bedouin girl was seriously injured by
shrapnel from an interception in the Arad area.[58][14] At least 31 others were
treated for injuries sustained while going to protected areas or for anxiety.
[15] Residents in Amman, the capital of Jordan, reported seeing flashes in the
sky above the city.[59]
According to Tasnim News Agency, one of the primary targets was the
airbase from which Israel launched the attack on the Iranian consulate.
[60] Other targets include the Ramon Airbase in the south of Israel.[61] The
source published videos of targets being hit.[60]
Reactions
U.S. President Joe Biden and his national
security administration assessing the attack in the Situation Room.
Egypt,[citation needed] Iraq, Jordan, Lebanon, Syria, Kuwait and Israel all closed
their airspace in response to the attacks, with Iranian airspace being closed
to VFR only flights.[62][63][64][65] Contrary to media reports, Jordan did not
announce a state of emergency.[66] Iran warned Jordan against providing any
possible support for Israel.[67] The United Kingdom condemned the Iranian
attack on Israel as "reckless".[68] Canada also condemned the attack, and the
United States said it would support Israel's defense.[69] The Embassy of the
United States in Jerusalem posted a security alert urging its workers to seek
shelter until further notice.[70] Saudi Arabia called for restraint, and said that
the United Nations Security Council must take responsibility for maintaining
peace and security in the region.[59]
