INTRODUCTION

Geometry is the branch of mathematics that deals with shapes, angles, dimensions
and sizes of a variety of things we see in everyday life. Geometry is derived from
Ancient Greek words – ‘Geo’ means ‘Earth’ and ‘metron’ means ‘measurement’. In
Euclidean geometry, there are two-dimensional shapes and three-dimensional
shapes.

In a plane geometry, 2d shapes such as triangles, squares, rectangles, circles are

also called flat shapes. In solid geometry, 3d shapes such as a cube, cuboid, cone,
etc. are also called solids. The basic geometry is based on points, lines and planes
explained in coordinate geometry.

The different types of shapes in geometry help us to understand the shapes day to
day life. With the help of geometric concepts, we can calculate the area, perimeter
and volume of shapes.

CALCULATION AND SOLUTION

QUESTION 1

The floor of a rectangular hall has a perimeter 250 m. If the cost of painting the four
walls at the rate of ` 10 per m² is ` 15000, find the height of the hall.

[Hint : Area of the four walls = Lateral surface area.]

2(Length+ Width) = Perimeter

L x W = Area

2(L + W) = 250

L + W = 125 – equation 1

COST

RM 10 = 1 m²

2(L + W) x Height x 10 = 15000

(L + W) x H = 750 – equation 2

HEIGHT

(L + W) x H =750

Substitute “ L = 125 - W “ from equation 1 to equation 2

(125 -W + W) x H = 750

125H = 750

H = 750/125

H = 6 meters

QUESTION 2

Curved surface area of a cone is 308 cm2 and its slant height is 14 cm. Find

1.Radius of the base

R = CSA / (22/7 x L)

R = 308 cm2 / (22/7 x 14 cm)

R = 308 cm2 / 43.9823

R = 7 cm

2.Total surface area of the cone

TSA = CSA + Base Area

TSA = 308 cm2 + (22/7 x r2)

TSA = 308 cm2 + 22/7 (7cm)2

TSA = 461.94 cm2

QUESTION 3

If the lateral surface of a cylinder is 94.2 cm² and its height is 5 cm, then find

(i) radius of its base (ii) its volume. (Use π = 3.14)

1. π = 3.14,h = 5 cm , π = 3.14

2πrh = area

2(3.14)r(5) = 94.2

5r = 94.2/6.28

5r = 15

r=3

2. r= 3,h = 5

Volume = πr²h

Volume = 3.14 x 3² x 5

Volume = 3.14 x 9 x5

Volume = 3.14 x 45

Volume = 141.3 cm^3

6
QUESTION 4

How many litres of milk can fill a hemispherical bowl of diameter 10.5 cm hold ?

D = 10.5

r = 5.25

vhemisphere = ½ x ¾ πr^3

vhemisphere = ½ x ¾ x π x 5.25 ^3

vhemisphere = 170.47 Litre
