RURAL ROADS
Time : 3 hours Max. Marks : 70
Note : i) First Question is compulsory and answer any four questions from the
remaining six questions. Each question carries 14 Marks.
ii) Answers to each question must be written at one place only and in the
same order as they occur in the question paper.
iii) Missing data, if any, may suitably be assumed.
1. a) What are the governing factors in route selection of rural highways? [ 1]
b) Define legal axle load, VDF and load safety factor. [ 2]
c) Write the significance of shoulder in rural roads as per IRC. [ 2]
d) Write any three failures of rigid pavements with reasons. [ 2]
e) Mention various maintenance activities in rural roads. [ 2]
f) What are the objectives of quality control in construction of rural roads? [ 2]
g) Explain stress distribution system in Flexible Pavements. [ 2]
h) Write the benefits of rural roads. [ 1]
2. a) Explain the procedure for finalization of rural roads alignment. What are [ 7]
the surveys needed for good alignment of rural roads?
b) Describe various environmental factors to be considered for rural roads [ 7]
construction as per IRC: SP: 20-2002.
3. a) Explain the recommended design procedure for flexible pavement design [ 8]
and highlight the computation of design traffic in terms of AADT and
ADT as per IRC: SP: 72-2007.
b) What are the IRC standards applicable for construction of Embankment [ 6]
and subgrades?
4. A cement concrete pavement is to be designed for a rural road in a [ 14]
village of TS and assume the temperature differential as 15 °C. The
estimated traffic volume is 200 CVPD which comprises heavy trucks
and animal drawn vehicles. Design the pavement according to the
guidelines of IRC: SP: 62-2004 for the following input parameters.
Grade of CC mix = M35, Modulus of elasticity of concrete
C = 3.05 x 105 kg/cm2, tire pressure = 7.5 kg/m2, µ = 0.15, α = 10 x 10 -
6 °
/ C, Design period = 20 years, Slab Size = 3.5 x 3.75 m, Spacing of
construction joints = 3.5m. Take soaked CBR = 5.2% and the equivalent
modulus of subgrade reaction as 43 kg/m2. Assume any missing data
suitably.

standards.
6. a) Explain the design procedure of flyash lime bound macadam pavement [8]
as per IRC standards.
b) In detail write the method of soil stabilization using lime and flyash [6]
including construction steps.
7. Write a short note on any FOUR of the following [14]
a) Rural roads drainage.
