IEEE Student Branch Activity Report for January 2021 –
Inauguration of IEEE SB Activities for 2021
The inaugural ceremony of IEEE Student Branch (SB) activities for the year 2021 was
conducted on 28th January, 2021 over the WebEx Meetings platform. The Chief Guest at the
occasion was Mr. Aravind Raj A, R&D Engineer, Hitachi ABB Power Grids, Chennai.
The ceremony began with an invocation to the almighty, followed by the welcome address by
Mr. Nagendra Tiwari, Vice-Chairman, SB 2020. Dr. N. Kumaresan, SB Advisor then gave the
presidential address. Then the activities of SB 2020 were summarized by Mr. Kannadasan K,
Chairman & Secretary, SB 2020 and its office bearers were felicitated by Dr. M. P. Selvan, SB
Counsellor who also introduced the new office bearers of SB 2021. The Chief Guest then gave
the inaugural address, after which the action plan for 2021 was presented by Mr. Kannadasan.
The ceremony was concluded after the vote of thanks was given by Mr. Alok Kumar,

Technical Talk by Mr. Aravind Raj A. on 28.01.2021
The IEEE Student Branch of NIT-Tiruchirappalli organized a technical talk via WebEx
Meetings on “Recent Trends in FACTS” by Mr. Aravind Raj A, R&D Engineer, Hitachi ABB
Power Grids, Chennai.
Mr. Raj covered different topics like introduction to FACTS technology, series compensation
using series capacitors and TCSC, shunt compensation using SVC and STATCOM and the
recent trends in this field like hybrid solutions. The session was attended by UG & PG students,
PhD scholars and faculties from all over the country.

Technical Talk by Dr. V.S. Srinivasan on 29.01.2021
The IEEE Student Branch of NIT-Tiruchirappalli in association with IEEE Madras Section
organized a technical talk via WebEx Meetings on “Science Behind Engineering Materials” by
Dr. V. S. Srinivasan, Professor, Homi Bhabha National Institute and Head, LIMS, IGCAR,
Kalpakkam. A registration form was created for the event, using which the participants
registered their necessary details. The meeting link was shared with the registered participants.
Dr. Srinivasan covered different topics like types of bonding, fundamentals of crystals and
microstructure, mechanical testing, fatigue and creep of materials, remaining life assessment
(end of service), modeling and simulation, superconductivity and Zirconium alloy- the material
used for thermal nuclear reactors. The session was attended by UG & PG students, PhD
scholars and faculties from all over the country.

The IEEE Student Branch of NIT-Tiruchirappalli organized a technical talk via WebEx
Meetings on “Utility Scale Solar Power Plant” by Mr. Shino Shibu, Deputy Executive
Engineer, Solar Projects, NLC India Ltd.
Mr. Shibu covered different topics like introduction to solar power plants (SPP), major
components in SPP, power evacuation substation, design of SPP, energy storage in SPP and
research ideas in this area. The session was attended by UG & PG students, PhD scholars and
faculties from all over the country.

Online Workshop by Mr. Ajinkya Lohakare from 16.04.21 to 20.04.21
The IEEE Student Branch of NIT-Tiruchirappalli in association with IEEE Computer Society
Chapter organized a five-day online workshop on “Cyber Security and Ethical Hacking” during
16th – 20th April 2021 via WebEx meetings. The event was handled by Mr. Ajinkya Lohakare,
Certified Ethical Hacker, Founder & CEO of Ditto Security.
The workshop had five technical hands-on sessions with 30 participants registered for the
event. Mr. Lohakare covered different topics like vulnerability of the internet enabled devices,
website phishing, Crypter software, recon engine, Tor browser, Maltego, virus detection,
hacking, cryptography and disk encryption. The workshop was attended by UG & PG students,
PhD scholars and faculties from all over the country.

Online Workshop by Mr. Vivek Yadav from 17.05.21 to 21.05.21
The IEEE Student Branch of NIT-Tiruchirappalli in association with IEEE Computer Society
Chapter and Robosol – For a Cause organized a five-day online workshop on “Cloud
Computing and Big Data” during 17th – 21st May 2021 via WebEx meetings. The event was
handled by Mr. Vivek Yadav, Senior Researcher & Developer, Robosol – For a Cause.
The workshop had five technical hands-on sessions with 45 participants registered for the
event. Mr. Yadav covered several topics like different cloud computing services and their
architectures, emergence of Big Data, Colab application, AWS management console, EC2
instances, cryptography tools, disk encryption tools, spoofing, hijacking and IOT hacking. The
workshop was attended by UG & PG students, PhD scholars and faculties from all over the
country.

Technical Talk by Dr. Annushree Bablani on 09.06.2021
The IEEE Student Branch of NIT-Tiruchirappalli in association with the IEEE Computer
Society chapter organized a technical talk via WebEx Meetings on “Detecting Deceit
Information from your Brain Activity” by Dr. Annushree Bablani, Assistant Professor, IIIT Sri
City, Chittoor, Andhra Pradesh.
Dr. Bablani covered several relevant topics like brain computer interface and its applications,
invasive & non-invasive methods for brain signal acquisition, signal processing, scope for
classification and regression, deceit information test, and EEG data classification. The session
was attended by UG & PG students, PhD scholars and faculties from all over the country.

Technical Talk by Dr. Rajeshwari Sridhar on 07.07.2021
The IEEE Student Branch of NIT-Tiruchirappalli in association with the IEEE Computer
Society chapter organized a technical talk via WebEx Meetings on “AI for legal domain” by
Dr. Rajeshwari Sridhar, Associate Professor, Department of Computer Science Engineering,
NIT Tiruchirappalli, Tamil Nadu.
Dr. Sridhar started the session by providing an introduction to artificial intelligence (AI) and
its allied domains. After explaining a few aspects of natural language processing (NLP), Dr.
Sridhar moved on to the core topic of AI aspects for law and presented a few case studies. The
research and development of computer systems that can intelligently solve problems in legal
domain or assist humans in solving them was the highlight of the session. The session was
attended by UG & PG students, PhD scholars and faculties from all over the country.

The IEEE Student Branch of NIT-Tiruchirappalli in association with the IEEE Power & Energy
Society chapter organized a technical talk via WebEx Meetings on “V2G Technology and
Market” by Mr. Ritesh Acharya, MS student, Department of Electrical and Electronics
Engineering, NIT Tiruchirappalli.
Mr. Acharya covered several topics such as types of electric vehicles, their role in the energy
sector, vehicle to grid (V2G) technology- its system requirements, applications, trial projects,
and challenges. The V2G market elements were also explained in detail. The session was
attended by UG & PG students, PhD scholars and faculties from all over the country.

The IEEE Student Branch of NIT Tiruchirappalli in association with IEEE Power & Energy
Society chapter organized a five-day alumni-interactive online workshop on “Electric Power
Engineering” during 13th – 17th September 2021 via WebEx meetings. The event was handled
by alumni of the Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering, NIT Tiruchirappalli.
The workshop had five interactive sessions. The first session of the workshop titled “FACTS”
was handled by Mr. A. Aravind Raj, R&D Engineer, Hitachi-ABB power grids. The second
session handled by Dr. Vijayakumar Krishnasamy, Faculty, Department of ECE, IIITDM
Kancheepuram focused on “Electrical Engineering Technologies”. The third session was on
“Role of power converters in electric vehicles” and handled by Dr. B. Dastagiri Reddy,
Assistant Professor, NIT Surathkal. The penultimate session was handled by Dr. Suryanarayana
Gangolu, Assistant Professor, NIT Surathkal and covered “Protection Issues and Challenges in
PV connected modern power systems. The final session of the workshop was on “Islanding
detection in microgrids” and delivered by Dr. Suman M, Assistant Professor, MNNIT
Allahabad. Dr. Suman also presented a short session on “Career opportunities after PhD”. The
workshop was attended by UG & PG students, PhD scholars and facultys from all over the
country.

Online Workshop from 29.10.21 to 02.11.21
The IEEE Student Branch of NIT Tiruchirappalli in association with IEEE APS Student
Chapter organized a five-day online workshop on “Antenna & Microwave Circuits Design
Using CST & TaraNG” from 29th October to 2nd November 2021 on the virtual platform of
Microsoft Teams. The event was handled by personnel from Jyoti Electronics and TaraNG.
Ten interactive sessions were conducted during the workshop. The first four sessions of the
workshop were titled “Introduction about CST and Metamaterials”, “Antenna based
Metamaterials”, “Extraction of constitutive parameters using post processing in CST”, “MIMO
Antenna Design and Reconfigurable Antenna”, “SIW Antenna and Rectifier Design” and were
handled by Mr. Rahul Vashisth, Sr. Application Engineer, Jyoti Electronics, India. The fifth and
sixth sessions on “Introduction to TaraNG, Hands-on session on wire Antenna design” were
handled by Mr. Swapnil Gaul, Founder TaraNG and Ms. Madhura Barshikar, Application
Engineer, TaraNG. Sessions seven and eight that focused on “Introduction to TaraNG Solvers
& Interface, Hands-on session on Antenna design and RF circuit design” were handled by Mr.
Gaul and Dr. Nihar Kanta Sahoo, Research Engineer, TaraNG. The ninth session was also
handled by Mr. Gaul and it was a “Hands-on session on Recent Trends in Antenna Design”.
The final session of the Training Program was on “Discussion and future activities” and was
delivered by Mr. Gaul and Dr. Sahoo. The workshop was attended by more than 80 participants
including UG & PG students, PhD scholars, staff and faculties from all over the country.

Online Session by Mr. K. Kannadasan on 22.12.2021
The IEEE Student Branch of NIT Tiruchirappalli organized an online session on
“Sensitization” on 22nd December 2021 on the virtual platform of YouTube Live. The event
was handled by Mr. Kannadasan K, Chairman, IEEE SB NIT-T and Research Scholar,
Department of Computer Science Engineering, NIT Tiruchirappalli
Mr. Kannadasan started the session with an introduction to the IEEE organization. He then
described the activities organized by the IEEE student branch of NIT Tiruchirappalli and
highlighted some of the recent accomplishments. He spoke at length of the various benefits
available to student members and encouraged the non-members among the audience to join
IEEE. He also explained the membership application process and revealed the special
promotional code for availing 50% discount in the membership fees. The workshop was
attended by more than 80 participants including UG & PG students, PhD scholars, staff and
faculties from all over the country.
