1.1 Introduction To Automobile Industry

Automobile industry, the business of producing and selling self-powered vehicles, including
passenger cars, trucks, farm equipment, and other commercial vehicles. By allowing consumers
to commute long distances for work, shopping, and entertainment, the auto industry has
encouraged the development of an extensive road system, made possible the growth of suburbs
and shopping centers around major cities, and played a key role in the growth of ancillary
industries, such as the oil and travel businesses. The auto industry has become one of the largest
purchasers of many key industrial products, such as steel. The large number of people the
industry employs has made it a key determinant of economic growth.

1.2 History of the automobile industry

The automobile industry, s inception began in the early 1890s with thousands of manufacturers
that were the pioneers of the horseless carriage. For many years, the United States of America
were the leaders of the world when it came to automobile production. In the year 1929, just
before the Great Depression, the world had roughly 32,028,400 automobiles in use, and the
United States of America automobile industry produced in the…show more content…

The automobile Industry of India accounts for up-to 21.8 per cent of the country ‘s
manufacturing gross domestic product (GDP).

An ever expanding middle class, a very young population, and an ever increasing interest of the
automobile companies in exploring the rural markets have made the two wheeler segment (with
nearly 80 per cent market share) the leader of the automobile market in India. In India the overall
passenger vehicle segment has 13.8 per cent market share.1

In the 21st century India has also become a substantial auto exporter, with very good export
growth expectations for the coming future. Various initiatives taken by the Government of India
and the major automobile players in the Indian market are expected to make India a leader not
only in the Two Wheeler market but also in the Four Wheeler market in the world by 2020.

1.3 Safety
Safety is a state that implies being protected from any risk, danger, damage, or cause of injury. In
the automotive industry, safety means that users, operators, or manufacturers do not face any risk
or danger coming from the motor vehicle or its spare parts. Safety for the automobiles
themselves implies that there is no risk of damage.

Safety in the automotive industry is particularly important and therefore highly regulated.
Automobiles and other motor vehicles have to comply with a certain number of regulations,
whether local or international, in order to be accepted on the market. The standard ISO 26262, is
considered one of the best practice frameworks for achieving automotive functional safety.

In case of safety issues, danger, product defect, or faulty procedure during the manufacturing of
the motor vehicle, the maker can request to return either a batch or the entire production run.
This procedure is called product recall. Product recalls happen in every industry and can be
production-related or stem from raw materials.

Product and operation tests and inspections at different stages of the value chain are made to
avoid these product recalls by ensuring end-user security and safety and compliance with the
automotive industry requirements. However, the automotive industry is still particularly
concerned about product recalls, which cause considerable financial consequences.

1.4 Market Size

In India Sales of commercial vehicles grew at 5.4 per cent to 52,481 units in the month of
January 2015 from a year ago, according to the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers…

In the year of March 2014 the multinational corporation consisted of about 338,874 employees
around the world and as of November of 2014, it is considered to be the twelfth-largest company
in the world by revenue. Toyota was the largest automobile manufacturer up-till 2012 in terms of
production ahead of Volkswagen Group and General Motors. In July of the year 2012, the
company posted the production of its 200-millionth vehicle. Toyota is considered as the world’s
first automobile manufacturer to produce more than 10 million vehicles per year. This feat was
achieved in the year 2012 according to OICA, and also in 2013 according to the data of Toyota.
As of the year 2014, Toyota was the largest listed company in Japan in terms of market
capitalization worth more than twice as much as the number 2 ranked company.

The company was founded by Kiichiro Toyoda in the year of 1937 as a spinoff from his father ‘s
company Toyota Industries to create the company Toyota automobiles. Three years earlier, in the
year 1934, while still a part of Toyota Industries, it created its first product namely the Type A
engine, and, in the year 1936, it created its first passenger car which is the Toyota AA

1.5 Future Of The Automotive Industry

The automotive industry is undergoing disruptive change. Customers are more demanding, rules
and regulations are stricter, competition is stronger and faster, and many companies are looking
to move ahead and create autonomous vehicles, with all the multi-faceted benefits they will
bring. To meet these new requirements and to realize this long-term vision, new technologies and
approaches are needed that push against the status quo.

Car makers and suppliers are being forced to examine conventional resources and traditional
fuels as well as tried and true development techniques as a result of individualization,
electrification, and autonomy as well as the constant demand from customers and stakeholders
for increased climate responsibility.

There is a huge need for professionals of all kinds in the automotive industry as we move toward
a future of electric and autonomous driving, with software, electronics, and autonomous vehicles
AI specialists in particular in high demand. Companies such as Cruise, Waymo, and Zoox are
developing increasingly sophisticated autonomous driving systems in the US, while Auto-X,
Baidu, [Link], and Xpeng are doing the same thing in other parts of the world.

Today, therefore, the future of the automotive industry is at a turning point. The most exciting
innovations are occurring in the field of digital technology and automotive software and service
advancements are redefining the way we traditionally think of the car. Leaders in the supply
chain have realized that digitization offers a chance to address these issues and driving this
change is essential for those that want to succeed in the automotive industry’s future.
As electric vehicles start to take over and new players are emerging onto the scene, the altering
automotive landscape is bringing with it rapid changes to the industry’s traditional business
models. Instead of many suppliers and OEMs feeding into incumbents, the new automotive
world is giving rise to vertically integrated organizations. This is because the new companies
developing autonomous vehicles understand the importance of having full control over every
aspect of their products.

Therefore, many use IP designs; to build customized, high-performance, energy-efficient silicon

semiconductors that have the capacity and capability to open up this new world. Using IP also
enables these new players to differentiate themselves in a highly competitive market, without
having to take on the cost and risk of developing the technology themselves.
II Company Overview
2.1 Company Profile

MAHLE is a leading international development partner and supplier to the Automotive industry
as well as a pioneer and technology driver for the mobility of the future.

The MAHLE Group is committed so making transportation more efficient, more

environmentally friendly, and more comfortable. MAHLE is continuously optimizing the
Combustion engine, driving forward the use of alternative fuels, and laying the foundation for
the widespread acceptance and worldwide introduction of e-mobility.

Based on a broad systems competence consisting of Engine Systems and Components, Filtration,
and Thermal Management, the group’s product portfolio addresses all the crucial issues relating
to the powertrain and air conditioning technology. Thanks to its expertise in electric and
electronic components and systems, MAHLE can thus also offer integrated system solutions for
e-mobility

MAHLE products are fitted in at least every second vehicle worldwide. For decades. MAHLE
components and systems have also been used on the world’s racetracks and off the road-in
stationary applications, for mobile machinery, rail transport, as well as marine Applications

MAHLE has developed a solution to increase the efficiency of the combustion engine in
commercial vehicles. This solution opens up further possibilities. More ways to meet statutory
emissions -regulations. More ways to improve transport using existing-Technologies.

MAHLE is the first to succeed in combining all these possibilities in one compact Box: using a
waste heat recovery (WHR) system. Now is the time to tap into the immense potential that lies in
the use of exhaust gas heat from combustion engines. We take a look at a very special
technology that is making a major contribution to climate protection.

making a major contribution to climate protection reduction and assembly are done on one level.

“The shortest possible distances save time and space,” explains Production Manager Vincenzo
Sabita Over the last few years, production has been constantly optimized According to the basic
“one-piece flow” principle-just one of many modifications.
After final assembly, the finished giant coolers thus only need to be brought through one single
gate before they stand in the courtyard, ready for shipment. The preparation of such
optimizations is meanwhile done using 3D scanners just one example of how Industry 4.0 has
since been adopted in everyday plant life.

However, competitive advantage is not created by low-cost production alone. “The individual
folded tubes on the cooler have a totally new shape,” Sabita points out a detail. This saves up to
25 percent in weight. This becomes apparent when you look over Dieter Essig’s shoulder. The
experienced machine setter carefully examines a metal strip bent in the shape of a concertina.
“The height must be exact and the gills need to have a clean form,” he says, explaining the
purpose of the inspection. Gills? Sure enough, each metal strip consists of a delicate structure
with fine incisions just like gills. This improves the air permeability and increases the cooling
capacity

2.3 PRODUCT PROFILE

Air intake modules

As the processes in the engine become ever more complex, the demands on the intake system
also increase. Emissions regulations and consumption specifications, shorter model cycles, and
rising expectations for performance in shrinking packages are the cornerstones of modern
development. For example, MAHLE was recently able to take another substantial step forward in
the development for modern combustion engines with the integration of Charge air cooling in the
air intake module

Air filters

Increasingly smaller package constraints require higher filtration performance, Especially with
respect to particle retention efficiency. This trend requires the use of high- performance filters,
more complex flow guidance design, and new filter element concepts.

As a technology leader in the area of plasticized filter elements, MAHLE can react flexibly to
any package constraint with the application of a wide range of design types
Oil mist separator

Oil mist separator systems reliably clean the gases from the crankcase that are contaminated with
oil mist Oil consumption can thereby be further reduced and the influence of combustion
minimized

The oil mist separator integrated in the crankcase ventilation system separates gaseous and liquid
components. The separated on is fed back into the od circuit and the cleaned air is recirculated to
the intake system.

Engine and cylinder head covers

Weight reduction and the functional integration of a thermoplastic cylinder head cover are
essential elements in a modern engine MAHLE maximizes these advantages by optimizing its
use of materials, minimizing material inputs and implementing highly Complex geometries.

Modifications to suit higher loads and temperatures, zero-maintenance requirements Over a

product’s service life, and compliance with acoustic specifications are an integral part Of the
development process

Oil mist separator

Crankcase ventilation systems reliably remove the gases from the crankcase that are
contaminated with oil mist. The oil mist separator integrated into the ventilation separates gaseon
and liquid components The separated oil is recirculated into the oil circuit and the Residual air is
recirculated into the intake system

The oil mist separator must ensure a high level of oil separation for all engine-specific
Requirements that lead to varying volume flow rates and fluctuating amounts of oil Active Oil
mist separation achieves this at a consistently high level, regardless of the engine Operating
conditions. This solution also enables active management of gases and testing of The ventilation
system to ensure its integrity and proper operation.

Air filter modules

Critical package constraint situations present a form challenge to the development of air filters
for commercial vehicles MAHLE air filter modules are individually customized according to
customer requests with regard to package constraint, weight, and interfaces to other systems
Another development focus of MAHLE is on achieving long maintenance intervals. Mechanical
and electrical sensors reliably display the maintenance status of the filter system. In addition to
customer-specific solutions. MAHLE also offers Modular Concepts, a modular system that can
be configured to meet customer requirements.

MAHLE is also a leader in environmental protection. Metal components are therefore eliminated
as early as in the design phase of the air filter modules, in order to simplify the Disposal of used
filter materials.

Cylinder head covers

Thermoplastic cylinder head covers meet the highest requirements for function, functional
integration, and design. These products provide maximum stability at low weights. They meet
high requirements with respect to engine acoustics and leak tightness, as well as the increased
design demands by vehicle and engine manufacturers. The latest generation of MAHLE cylinder
head covers for commercial vehicle has even more to offer. It allows functional integration, such
as an integrated oil mist separator, and is modular in design so that it can be used cost-effectively
in engines with different numbers of cylinders:
