LESSON AIMS: by the end of the lesson, the students:
- will be able to recognize animals by their category;
- to use the verb can in the affirmative and negative forms;
- to use action verbs.
ANTICIPATED PROBLEMS: -some students might need further help and extra indications in
solving the tasks and they may also need some of these indications to be given in Romanian;
-some students might feel nervous and reluctant to participate in the activity, so they may need
more encouragement.
MATERIALS: handouts, computer, video projector, flipchart, smiley faces, online video.
METHODS: conversation, explanation, exercise, dialogue, prediction (deductive method)

Activity 1: Warmer
Timing: 2 minutes
Activity 2: Let's recognize the animals!
Aims: - to activate previous knowledge (listening, speaking)
Timing: 7 minutes.
Interactions: T-Ss, Ss-T, whole class
Procedures: The teacher presents the subject of the lesson to the pupils, namely about animals.
The teacher shows the pupils some flashcards with animals (farm and wild animals). The teacher
invites the pupils to recognize the animals shown.

Activity 3: Farm or wild animals?
Aims – to practice the animals (listening, speaking)
Timing: 8 minutes.
Interaction: whole class
Procedures: Because these animals live in different places, some of them live in a farm, some of
them in the jungle or forest, teacher asks the pupils to sort the animals (flashcards). The teacher
will invite the pupils to the board to sort the animals into the two columns.

Activity 4: Can you unscramble the animal words?
Aims: - to develop reading, listening and writing skills
Timing: 4 minutes
Interactions: whole class
Procedures: The teacher presents to the pupils some animal words to unscramble.
The teacher monitors the activity around the class and helps the students where necessary.
Activity 5: Video about what animals can do?!
Aims: - to develop listening skills (listening, reading, singing)
Timing: 4 minutes.
Interaction: whole class
Procedures: The teacher uses the video projector to show the pupils a short video about what
animals can and cannot do. This activity is necessary to prepare a short review of action verbs.
The teacher monitors the activity around the class and helps the students where necessary.
Activity 6 ,,Action verbs ”
Aims: - to personalize the topic ( speaking, reading)
Timing: 6 minutes.
Interaction: T-Ss, Ss-T., whole class
Procedures: The teacher shows the pupils some flashcards and asks them which action verb it is
about. After the pupils answer, the teacher places the pictures on the board.
Activity 7 ”What animals can do?”
Aims: - to practice the verb ”Can” (speaking, writing)
Timing: 14 minutes.
Interaction: T-Ss, Ss-T, whole class
Procedures: First of all, the teacher explains to the pupils that the verb can is the same for all
persons. After that, he reminds them the way in which the verb can can be used.
S + Can + Action Verb (affirmative sentence)
S + Can’t + Action Verb (negative sentence)
Can + S + Action Verb? (interrogative sentence)
The teacher will give some examples to fix the ways in which the verb can can be used:
E.g. 1
- An elephant can run.
- An elephant can’t run.
- Can an elephant run?
- Yes, it can.
- No, it can’t.
E.g. 2
- A rabbit can jump.
- A rabbit can’t climb.
- Can a rabbit jump?
- Yes, it can.
- Can a rabbit climb?
- No, it can’t.
If necessary, the teacher will use a few more flashcards to form sentences with the verb can.
Pupils will receive a worksheet as an individual task. They will make sentences using the verb
can and the animals studied. On the worksheet, pupils will have five animals and four action
verbs. Two verbs will show what an animal can do, and the other two verbs what it cannot do
(appendix 1).
E. g. A monkey can run and jump, but it can’t swim or fly.
Activity 8 – Production
Timing: 5 minutes
Aim: to consolidate the structures (writing, speaking)
On the same worksheet, pupils will have to write three animals that can: swim, jump,
climb and some pupils report to the class. (appendix 2)
Evaluation: The teacher appreciates pupils activity and they will receive stamps with
smiley faces or appreciative messages.
*** If there is still time, the teacher can propose the mime game to the pupils. The teacher invites
a pupil to the front, he will imitate an animal and the teacher together with the pupils will ask
him questions:
