Welcome Wildcats!
Dear Parents and Students,
I am so excited to be your 3rd grade teacher for this school year! My name is Ms.
Powell, and I will be your Homeroom, math, and science teacher. I am so eager to get to know
you and your family while spending time teaching your child. I am incredibly open to all
communication so please do not ever hesitate to reach out with any questions you may have. I
want to work together to help every student be as successful as possible!
Ms. Powell – All About Me!!
As I said, my name is Ms. Powell and I have been at Walker Elementary for 5 years.
My goal for this year is to maintain and foster an environment where learning and creativity are
encouraged and supported. I also demand a very excepting environment, so all students feel
welcome. I want every child to leave this year with a deeper love of learning and a stronger
desire to gain knowledge.
Classroom Rules and Consequences
To maintain structure and keep my classroom safe, I have established the following
rules, (these will not be the only rules we adhere to in the classroom):
1. Encourage each other to be the best we can be.
2. Always show compassion.
3. Celebrate our diversity.
4. Treat others the way you want to be treated.
If the rules of the classroom are not followed, there will be a set of consequences. The first
infraction will result in a redirection from the teacher in the room. If the undesired behavior
continues, the student will be asked to cool down in the “cool down” area as to take the time and
effort to correct their own behavior. If the student still refuses to follow the rules, I will have to
call for the help of the BI, or an Assistance Principal, and this will end in a phone call home and
lunch detention. I do not expect to get to that point this year, and plan for this year to be
amazing! If the rules of the classroom are followed, we should create an optimal learning
environment. This will also lead to the chance for more class rewards!!
Classroom Procedures
Here are the procedures for homework, late assignments, and retrieving work missed due to
absence.
Homework
For homework, it will be a simple turn in process. If the students are submitting paper
copies of homework assignments, then students will put their completed work in the “Turn In”
bin at the beginning of class. If they complete any online assignments, then I will assign those
through Schoology so the turn in process is uncomplicated and easy to use. The students will
have a weekly homework sheet that consists of 5 or 6 problems that are related to the weeks
lesson. They will turn that in every Friday morning to the “Turn In” bin. They will also be
required to complete four lessons a week on Imagine Math. They will be given class time to
complete these things, however, what they are unable to finish in class they will complete at
home.
Late Assignments
Late work will be very dependent upon the situation. I will accept late work without a
valid explanation for 2 days after the given due date. The first day it is late, there will be five
points off the total score earned, the second day it is late, will result in -10, and after that it will
be input at a 50 in the gradebook.
Missed Work
I will keep an area with all the work we complete for each day so that students who
were absent know exactly where to get what they missed. This spot will be labeled “Absent.” I
will set the procedure at the beginning of the year that when they are absent it is their
responsibility to check the “Absent” location to gather all work they may have missed. If a
student is struggling with content, they missed I will offer tutoring time to help prevent that
student from falling behind.
Please note that these procedures follow the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act
(FERPA).
Contact Information
Parents are encouraged to contact me with any questions or concerns. You can reach me at
[email protected], Remind, or [google voice number – many of the teachers at the
school I am currently employed at use a google voice number so they don’t have to give out their
personal cell number, I will give the students’ parents/guardians that contact number]. I look
forward to a successful school year with you and your child.
Best regards,
Ms. Powell
