Introduction
File redirection is a feature in server
networks that redirects the storage
location of specific user files or
folders from their local devices to a
centralized server.
File Redirection
It can be managed via Group Policy in
Windows Server. Administrators use
Group Policy Objects (GPOs) to centrally
configure redirection rules for user folders
like Documents and Desktop. This ensures
consistency, security, and streamlined
administration across the network.
File Redirection
Folder redirection is a new approach
to user profile folder allocation on
server.
The built-in folders in computers can
be redirected by GPO.
File Redirection
There are two types of redirection
modes:
Basic
Advance
MODES
Basic Advanced
Redirect users’ folder to the same Specify locations for various user
location group
- Target folder location This is intended for use in large-
scale networks only.
Redirect to the local user
profile location
Create folder for each user
under the root path
Redirect to the following path
Redirection Mode
Folder path where all users' folders
will be stored in Server
Configuration
If checked, the server will fully
takeover the files within the
folder.
If checked, all the files within
the folder will be moved to the
designated path input in Root
path.
Configuration
Created folder will leave in new location
The content also will leave in new location
User still have access to the content in redirection
location
Configuration
If toggled on:
Created folder will return to the local user profile location
The content will be copied back to profile location
The content will not be erased from the directed folder location
User will have access to the content only on the local computer
If toggled off:
Created folder will return to the local user profile location
The content will be relocated to profile location
Advantages
It supports utilizing of slow speed networks
User data can be archived during ongoing administration what
is to be more secure since user is isolated from the process
Administrator can limit disc quota allocated for certain folder
User data can be redirected to hard disk of the local computer
from another hard disk where system files are stored. It plays
safe user files if OS reinstallation will be needed.
Backup copies of data are safely stored on server
Limitations
STORAGE REQUIREMENTS: To centralize file storage, ensure the server has ample
space. Administrators must forecast future needs and allocate storage accordingly.
COMPATIBILITY ISSUES: File redirection may pose compatibility issues, particularly
with older software. Redirected files could cause malfunctioning in certain
applications.
ADMINISTRATIVE OVERHEAD: Configuring file redirection settings through Group
Policy can be demanding, especially in extensive networks. Consistent monitoring
and maintenance are vital for seamless operation and issue resolution.
SECURITY CONCERNS: Redirected files are stored centrally on the server, raising
security concerns related to data access and integrity. Administrators must
implement appropriate encryption measures
