DECILE

The document discusses measures of position, specifically deciles, using ungrouped data. It provides the definition and method for calculating deciles using the Mendenhall and Sincich method with linear interpolation. An example is given to demonstrate finding the 2nd, 6th, and 7th deciles of a set of time data.

Decile of
Ungrouped Data
Learning Objectives:
Illustrate decile as a measure of
position.
Compute decile of ungrouped data.
Appreciate the concept of
measures of position in real-life
situation.

Mendenhall and Sincich Method & Linear
Interpolation
A: Arrange the data in ascending order.
B: Locate the position of score in the distribution.
If the position is decimal, we use linear interpolation
C: Interpolate the value to obtain the decile.
Steps of Interpolation
Step 1: Subtract the value in the lower position from the upper position.
Step 2: Multiply the result by the decimal part obtained in (B).
Step 3: Add the result in Step 2, to the smaller value in Step 1 .
Activity: Time to Record

Mrs. Olan is a veterinarian. One morning, she asked her

secretary to record the service time for 15 costumers
The following are service times in minutes:

20, 35, 55, 28, 46, 32, 25, 56, 55, 28, 37, 60, 47, 52, 17

Find the value of the 2nd decile, 6th decile, 7th

decile.
A. Arrange the values in ascending
order.

17 20 25 28 28 32 35 37 46 47 52 55 55 56 60
Calculate D2
A: 17 20 25 28 28 32 35 37 46 47 52 55 55 56 60

n = 15
B: Position of 𝑫𝟏
2

The value of D4 is
between 3rd and
4th position.

Deciles divides the data into ________ ten equal

parts. To find the decile of a given data set, we
always start by arranging the data in ________ascending
order. Next, we will find the ______ position of the
linear
decile. Lastly, we use ________
interpolation to find the exact
value of the decile.
Direction: Calculate the decile of the ungrouped data.
Show complete solution.

A line leader on a certain company in EPZA

tabulated the number of outputs made by 13
production operators in the past 30 minutes.
Their output are as follows: Calculate D5, D7, D8.

26, 11, 20, 17, 22, 1, 24, 14, 16, 28, 17, 21, 21
