DETAILED LESSON PLAN

SCIENCE 6

I. OBJECTIVES
At the end of the lesson, learners should be able to:
a. identify each planet in the Solar System,
describe their unique characteristics, and understand
their positions relative to the Sun;
b. arrange the planets orderly; and
c. demonstrate proper attitude when working with
groupmates.

II. SUBJECT MATTER

Topic: The Sun and the Different Planets in the Solar System
A. Reference: Cyber Science, Worktext in Science and Technology, p. 320
Science Health and Environment 5, pp. 251-254
B. Materials: PowerPoint, video presentation(YouTube), pictures and cutting
materials.

III. PROCEDURE
Teacher’s Activity Pupils’ Activity
 Greetings
- Good morning, class!
- Okay, before you take your seats, please pick up
some pieces of paper and arrange your chairs.
- Please be seated.
 Checking of Attendance
- Is there any absent from the class today?
 Setting of Standards
- Before we start, I will give rules for you to
follow.
- First, avoid unnecessary noises.
- Second, raise your hand if you want to answer
or ask questions. Understood?
A. Motivation
- Now, before we start our lesson for today, I prepared a

to come here in front and arranged these jumbled
words.

- That’s right!
-Very Good!

B. Presentation
- Yes, ma’am!
I have here a short video presentation about planets in
our solar system, and I want you to take some notes and
observe it carefully.

All right Class, what do you observe on the video? Different characteristics of the
planets.
Very Good!

On the video that I’ve shown, does anyone of you can Our topic for today is all about the
now tell what would be our lesson for today? Sun and the Different Planets in
the Solar System.

- Before we go further into our discussion, let us read

first our objectives.

a. identify each planet in the Solar System, describe

their unique characteristics, and understand their
positions relative to the Sun;
b. arrange the planets orderly; and
c. demonstrate proper attitude when working
with groupmates.

C. Discussion

Today, we will be discussing about the Sun and the

Different Planets in the Solar System.
- Are you ready to learn?
- So class, what is a Solar System?
- That’s correct! Thank you ___. The Solar System is made up of all
- In addition to planets, the Solar System also the planets that orbit our Sun
consists of moons, comets, asteroids, minor planets, and ma’am.
dust and gas.
- What are the planets in our Solar System?

- Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars,

Very good! All of your answers are correct. Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune.

How about the rocky area between mars and Jupiter?

Asteroid belt
- Let’s talk about the sun, is the sun a star?

- Yes, it is. Now remember class that the sun’s

energy comes from nuclear fusion (where hydrogen is - Yes ma’am!
converted to helium) within its core. This energy is
released from the sun in the form of heat and light.
- Remember: Stars produce light. Planets reflect
light.

- Now, based on the short video presentation that

you’ve watched give me some unique characteristics of
the eight planets.
- Mercury, the closest planet to
the sun, Mercury is only a bit
larger than Earth's moon.
- Venus, the second planet from
the sun, Venus is terribly hot, even
hotter than Mercury. The
atmosphere is toxic. The pressure
at the surface would crush and kill
you.
- Earth, the third planet from the
sun, Earth is a waterworld, with
two-thirds of the planet covered by
ocean. It’s the only world known
to harbor life. Earth’s atmosphere
is rich in life-sustaining nitrogen
and oxygen.
- Mars, the fourth planet from the
sun, is a cold, dusty place. The
dust, an iron oxide, gives the
planet its reddish cast. Mars shares
similarities with Earth: It is rocky,
has mountains and valleys, and
storm systems ranging from
localized tornado-like dust devils
to planet-engulfing dust storms.

- Jupiter, the fifth planet from the
sun, Jupiter is huge and is the most
massive planet in our solar system.
It’s a mostly gaseous world,
mostly hydrogen and helium. Its
swirling clouds are colorful due to
different types of trace gases.
- Saturn, the sixth planet from the
sun is known most for its rings.
- Uranus, the seventh planet from
the sun, Uranus is an oddball.
Uranus is about the same size as
Neptune.
- Neptune, the eighth planet from
the sun, Neptune is known for
strong winds — sometimes faster
than the speed of sound. Neptune
is far out and cold. Neptune is
about 17 times as massive as
Earth.

Very Good, let’s give our self a big clap!

D. Application
- This time we will have a group activity. I will group
you in 3 groups.
- Each group will have a different task (Draw
Lots). But before I give the instructions for your
activities, let us first read and understand the rubrics

Promptness 5pts
Behavior 5pts
Cooperation 10pts
Creativity 10pts
Correctness 20pts
Total 50pts

- Now that we already know the rubrics, let’s proceed

to the activity:

Group 1: Arrange and identify the planets in the

Solar System from largest to smallest.
Group 2: Arrange and identify the planets in the
Solar System from smallest to largest.
Group 3: Arrange and identify the planets in the
Solar System according to their original place in the
solar system.
Is there any clarifications? If none, you may begin.
You have 10 minutes to prepare. Timer starts now!
Clap if you done.
- The pupils will perform their
different tasks
Okay, class. Time’s up! Everybody take your seats. Let
us listen and observe each group’s presentations.

- Group 1, you may proceed.

(The teacher will check the work of group)
- Well done, Group 1! Let’s give them a
Firecrackers Clap. - Group 1 will present their work.

- Group 2? Are you ready?

(The teacher will check the work of group)
- Very good, Group 2! Let’s give them a Let’s Go
Clap. - Yes ma’am. Group 2 will present
their work.
- Group 3? Please begin.
(The teacher will check the work of group)
- Good job, Group 3! Let’s give them a Barangay
Clap. - Okay ma’am. Group 3 will
present their work.
- Did you enjoy the activity class?

E. Generalization

- Again class, what is a Solar System?

- The Solar System is made up of

all the planets that orbit our Sun.
In addition to planets, the Solar
System also consists of moons,
- Very good! Can you now give the planets of our comets, asteroids, minor planets,
solar system? and dust and gas.

- Yes ma’am! The planets of our

Solar system are Mercury, Venus,
- What is the center of our solar system? Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn,
Uranus, and Neptune.
- Are there any questions regarding our lesson?
- Since there are no more questions, let’s now have - The SUN is the center of our
a short quiz. Solar System ma’am.
- None, ma’am.
