Lesson 8 - Patterns
Objectives
Exercise 1 - Patterns Applied to 3D Offset Machining
• Import Model…\PMData\Models\[Link]
• Define an Ø6 Ballnose tool and name BN6
• Define a Block to Min Max limits and calculate Safe Area to defaults
• Select the 3 surfaces shown highlighted above and create a Selected
Surface Boundary to 0.02 tolerance
• From the Pattern Tab select create a new Pattern followed by insert an
active Boundary

• Un-draw all and turn on Pattern. In Curve editor select the Cut tool
and cut at the points shown below. Delete unwanted segments and Accept
changes
• Open a 3D Offset Finishing strategy and use Pattern 1 and Boundary 1 to
limit
• Make a copy of Toolpath with no Pattern selected and compare the
difference
• Select File & Save As Project
to…\COURSEWORK\PMProjects\Speaker1
Summary
In the above exercise, you are now able to complete the following:
• Create a Selected Surface Boundary and inserted it into a Pattern where it
was edited to create an automatic pattern between the selected segments
• Pattern finishing strategy
• We then looked at modifying a pattern by using the cut tool to create a
segment that could be used for a pattern in 3D Offset

Exercise 2 – Deep Pattern
• Open Project…\PMData\Projects\DeepPattern
Apply the following:
• Create a Ø5 ballnose tool
• Calculate Block to Min/Max limits
• Calculate Safe Area
• Reset lead in/outs to None
• Create a Pattern finishing strategy using Pattern 1, with a Base position
set to Automatic and Thickness of -3.0 and Calculate
A message will appear telling us that the toolpath has failed due to the size of the tip
radius of the tool
• Make a copy of Pattern 1. From the Curve Editor select Embed
• In the Embed Pattern form, choose Drop from the Method pulldown menu
and set Tolerance to 0.01, Apply
This has now created an Embedded pattern onto the 3d surface
• Rename embedded pattern as Embed 1

• Change Base position to Drive curve, apply an Axial Offset of (-3.0).
Turn Gouge check off and the Thickness to (0.0). Calculate
Toolpath now requires multiple cuts
• Enable Editing of toolpath, select Multiple Cuts page and from the
Mode menu select Offset down, tick Upper limit and enter -1.0 and
Calculate and save Project
• Select File & Save As Project
to…\COURSEWORK\PMProjects\DeepPattern1
Summary
In the above exercise, you are now able to complete the following:
• Create a toolpath from an embedded pattern and added 2 further step-
downs
