The Italian composer Domenico Cimarosa wrote more than 60 operas – mostly comic ones – for which he became famous throughout Europe.
However, he was also a fine keyboard player, so it is not surprising that he composed more than 80 keyboard sonatas.
This Allegro is the finale of Cimarosa’s Sonata in C minor (C. 68). It is a moto perpetuo piece; that is, it keeps up the same quick figuration
throughout. This gives it a relentless quality, which is increased by phrase repetition – in bars 33–36, for example, a six-note figure is exactly
repeated three times. Articulation is up to the player, as there is none in the source.
Source: MS entitled ‘Raccolta di varie Sonate per il fortepiano composte dal Signore Cimarosa’; in the library of the Conservatorio di Musica Luigi Cherubini,
Florence. Naturals to the note B are often missing (e.g. in bars 10, 48 and 56), but there is never any doubt about what the composer intended. All dynamics are
editorial suggestions only, as are slurs to grace notes from bar 45 onwards.
