INTRODUCTION

Chains are incredibly versatile and ubiquitous objects that have played a crucial role in

human civilization for centuries. At their most basic level, chains are a series of interconnected

metal links or rings that form a flexible, linear structure. While simple in design, chains have

found countless applications across various industries and aspects of daily life.

One of the primary uses of chains is in the realm of mechanics and machinery. Chains are

employed in countless mechanical systems, from bicycle chains that transfer power from the

pedals to the wheels, to heavy-duty chains used in construction equipment and industrial machin-

ery. Their strength, durability, and ability to transfer force make them invaluable components in

many mechanical operations.

Beyond their mechanical applications, chains have also served as essential tools in nu-

merous industries. In agriculture, chains are used to secure and lift heavy loads, such as bales of

hay or farm equipment. In maritime operations, chains anchor ships and support various nautical

equipment. Even in the fashion industry, chains have been incorporated into jewelry and acces-

sories, adding a touch of edginess or industrial chic to personal styles.

However, chains have also carried darker connotations throughout history. They have

been used as instruments of oppression and imprisonment, symbolizing captivity and the loss of

freedom. The weight and strength of chains have made them effective restraints, although their

usage in such contexts has been widely condemned as inhumane and oppressive.

Despite their complex history, chains remain indispensable tools in modern society, serv-

ing diverse purposes and embodying both functional and symbolic significance. From the deli-

links continue to play a vital role in our daily lives and technological advancements.

ACKNOWLEDGEMENT

Without the help and encouragement of those who happened to volunteer some of their

time, advice, and expertise, it would not have been possible to meet this need. Their insightful

observations functioned as a compass, offering guidance and definition all along the way to

fulfilling this need. Their dedication to providing advice enhanced the procedure, transforming

obstacles into chances for development and education.

Recognizing the cooperative efforts of peers and colleagues is also important. Their

assistance whether in the form of group brainstorming sessions, helpful criticism, or practical

help was crucial to the project's successful completion. Their commitment created a culture of

cooperation and mutual success in a group setting. In addition, acknowledgement is given to

advisors and mentors whose guidance was crucial in forming the strategy and procedures used to

address this need. Their knowledge, support, and dedication to promoting both individual and

group development have made a lasting impression on the trip.

Finally, appreciation is given to friends and family whose unwavering support and

understanding made it possible to overcome obstacles and pursue this endeavor. Their support

and conviction in the significance of the current task have served as a source of resilience and

drive.

STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

A 5/8-in. roller chain is used on a hoist to lift & 500-lb. load through 14 ft. in 24 sec. at constant

velocity. If the load on the chain is doubled during the speed-up period, compute the factor of

safety (a) based on the chain's ultimate strength, (b) based on its fatigue strength. (c) At the given

speed, what is the chain's rated capacity (N - 20 teeth) in hp? Compare with the power needed at

the constant speed. Does it look as though the drive will have a "long" life?
