TEENS THREE FINAL EXAM Paper 2
Time allowed: 1h.15’ (+ List: 1h. 30’)
SECTION A: Reading Comprehension
Read the text and choose the correct option, true (T) or false (F).
Charles Chaplin
Nobody knows exactly when Charles Chaplin was born. Some people say it was on April 16, 1889 but
other people say it is possible he was born on a different day in an entirely different year! In addition to this,
people don’t know where he was born: some believe it was in London, England and others think it was in
Fontainebleau, France. What we know, however, is who his parents were: his dad was Charles Chaplin, Sr.,
his mom was Hannah Harriette Hill and both of them were actors and musicians.
Charles Chaplin’s life as a child was incredibly difficult and sad. He had to start working when he was
five years old and continued working for a very long time. He got many jobs as an actor: when he was 11, his
brother helped get him the role of a comic cat in “Cinderella” in London. In 1903 he appeared in “Jim, A
Romance of Cockayne”, and then he got his first regular job as the newspaper boy Billy in “Sherlock Holmes”,
a part he played until 1906.
According to immigration records, he arrived in the United States on October 2, 1912. There, he started
working in many movies but in most of them he played the same character called “The Tramp”. This character
was always looking for a job and he didn’t have much money. After a few years he became extremely popular
and had a lot of fans. In 1919 he created his own film company so he could make and act in all the things he
wanted and he didn’t have to do anything he didn’t like doing anymore.
In 1940 he made his first film with sound. Before, all his movies were silent and in black and white!
Unfortunately, some years later he had a lot of problems with his films and he lost his popularity. In the end, he
left the United States and moved to Switzerland where he continued making a lot of movies.
Chaplin wrote, directed, produced, edited, acted, and composed the music for most of his films. He was
a perfectionist, so he could spend years on the development and production of a film. In 1972, he received an
Honorary Academy Award for his amazing contribution to the history of film making.
