EXAMINER(S): Ms ME Groenewald DATE: 22/05/2015

MODERATOR: Mr MB Seitshiro TIME: 11:00

Instructions:
 Answer all questions.
 Show all calculations and graphs (where applicable).
 Work to 3 decimal places unless stated otherwise.

Question 1 (3 marks)

Choose the correct answer and write down the corresponding letter only.

1.1) A 95% confidence interval for the population mean is calculated to be 75.29 to 81.45. If the
confidence level is reduced to 90%, the confidence interval will:

A. remain the same.

B. become wider.
C. become narrower.
D. double in size.
(1)

1.2) A statistical hypothesis is a:

A. statement made about a population parameter.

B. statement made about a statistic.
C. fact regarding a population parameter.
D. fact regarding a statistic.

1.3) Choose the correct statement.

A. The value stated in the null hypothesis is accepted to be false until proven correct.
B. The value stated in the null hypothesis is accepted to be correct until proven false.
C. The value stated in the alternative hypothesis is accepted to be correct until proven false.
D. None of the above.
(1)

Question 2 (7 marks)

A paint retailer wants to estimate the correct amount of paint that is contained in five-litre cans purchased
from a certain manufacturer. The average amount of paint in a sample of 50 five-litre cans is 4.985l with a
standard deviation of 0.04l.

2.1) Determine a 95% confidence interval for the population mean amount of paint included in a five-litre
can and interpret your answer. (5)

2.2) Based on your findings in 2.1, do you think that the paint retailer has a right to complain to the
manufacturer? Motivate your answer. (2)

Question 3 (14 marks)

3.1) Following a major earthquake, a city engineer must determine whether a stadium is structurally sound
for an upcoming athletic event. Suppose the null hypothesis is “the stadium is structurally sound” and
the alternative hypothesis is “the stadium is not structurally sound”. Would the engineer least like to
make a Type I error or a Type II error? Explain your answer. (2)

3.2) Joan’s Nursery specialises in custom-designed landscaping for residential areas. The estimated
labour-cost associated with a particular landscaping proposal is based on the number of plantings of
trees, scrubs, etc. to be used for the project. For cost-estimating purposes, managers use 2 hours of
labour time for the planting of a medium-sized tree. The following table shows the labour times (in
hours) for a sample of 10 plantings:

1.7 1.5 2.6 2.2 2.4 2.3 2.6 3.0 1.4 2.3

Assume that the data is normally distributed. Test the hypothesis that the mean tree-planting time
differs from 2 hours, at a 5% significance level. (12)

Question 4 (10 marks)

A local radio station claims that more than 30% of the listeners in its reception area tune into its daily news
broadcasts. The radio station conducted a telephone survey of 400 randomly selected listeners, and 144
listeners indicated that they tune into the radio station’s news broadcasts. Use a 1% significance level to test
the radio station’s claim. (10)

Question 5 (11 marks)

A maintenance supervisor wants to compare the standard version of an instructional booklet with a new
version that is claimed to be superior. An experiment was conducted in which 26 technicians were divided
into two equal groups, provided with one of the booklets and then given a test a week later. The descriptive
statistics on the test scores for the two groups (in percentages) are summarised as follows:

Standard New
version version

Sample mean 72.0 80.2

Sample standard deviation 9.3 10.1

Test the hypothesis that the new version of the instructional booklet is better than the standard version of the
instructional booklet. Use  = 0.1. (11)
