Identifying, analysing and evaluating needs and
Topic: approaches for a student with additional
educational needs

TASK DETAILS
Based on a provided case study, you will prepare a report using the
following structure.

REPORT STRUCTURE
Develop the case study report using the required structure below. The
purpose of the case study report is to demonstrate your ability to apply
principles and concepts of special education to a practical situation.

Part 1: Evaluation of Inclusive Education

 Discuss inclusion in contemporary Australian educational contexts


(including a definition of terms)
 Consider how these inclusive education policies and practices can
support the inclusion of the case study student and meet the needs
of other stakeholders within the educational context – including the
parents, community, school staff and peers

Part 2: Profile of strengths/needs

 Discuss the student’s background in relation to both family and


school contexts
 Consider the type and nature of the student’s disability and impacts
this may have on all areas of education – academic, social,
emotional and physical
 Consider the individual student’s particular strengths, challenges
and needs and the way these can be supported within the
educational context
Part 3: Identification of assessment and data collection methods

 Consider the additional information needed to inform decision-


making and instruction for the student.
 Discuss appropriate assessment and data collection methods that
would be used to gather this information

Part 4: Identification and analysis of learning goals and support


strategies

 Identify at least 2 appropriate learning goals for the individual


student
 Discuss appropriate educational strategies, differentiation
/adjustments and resources that may be used to support the
student in achieving these learning goals
 Consider the expected outcomes of these goals and approaches
with regards to the student’s academic, social, emotional and
physical development and learning

Part 5: Presentation of proposed program (as an Appendix)

 Prepare a document where you will provide details of the proposed


program of learning for the student to the parent and/or other
support staff
 This document will use the ‘Learner Profile’ format provided and
should include a summary of the information presented in the
report

PREPARING AND PRESENTING THE ASSIGNMENT

This assignment task is closely associated with material from topics 1


through to 4. It is designed to assess the practical application of; special
education legislation/policies, assessment and data collection, strategies,
resources, adjustments and inclusive practices, to meet the specific needs
of an individual student. To complete this assignment you will need to
refer to course material, however, you are expected to find additional
references to strengthen the credibility of your essay. Please ensure that
any additional sources that you cite as evidence are relevant and
referenced correctly.
FORMAT GUIDELINES
It is important that your assignments are professionally presented. The
following lists have been developed to provide you with guidance about
formatting requirements (please check the APA manual for more detailed
information – e.g. for formatting quotations and lists).

1. When formatting your report, please remember:

 One inch margins (approximately 2.5cms) for left, right, top and
bottom of page
 The report uses double or one and a half line spacing
 Times New Roman size 12 font is used
 Titles for sections are centered, subheadings are flush with the left
hand margin
 The first line of each paragraph is indented (1 tab), subsequent lines
are flush with the left hand margin
 There are no line spaces between paragraphs, but one line space after
a paragraph if a heading or subheading follows.
 Use left alignment throughout the paper (including the reference list) –
not justified alignment
 Have a coversheet with your full name, student number, assignment
description, and word count

2. When formatting the reference list at the end of your report, please
remember:

 The reference list is not included in word limit.


 Start a new page for the reference list.
 "References" top and center of page.
 APA guidelines for each citation to be used.
 APA format for page layout – double or one and a half spacing, first
line for each reference flush left with page, and subsequent lines are
indented. No line spaces between references.
