Fight of Apollyon:

Character:
Apollyon: “The shape of Foul Fiend. He was at least nine feet high, and the nearer he came, the
more hideous he grew. He had scales like fish, and they are his pride. He had wings like a dragon
and feet like a bear, and out of his belly came fire and smoke.” The Prince of the City of
Destruction.

Verses:
1. Do not gloat over me, my enemy! Though I have fallen, I will rise. Though I sit in
darkness, the Lord will be my light. (Micha7:8)
2. But he said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in
weakness.” Therefore I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that
Christ’s power may rest on me. (Corinthians12:9)

Summary:
Christian rested peacefully for the night, and was armed by the people in Palace Beautiful before
setting off. Later on the road, he met Apollyon, the lord of the dying city. Apollyon tried to
persuade Christian to return to his power, but Christian refused. So the two had a fierce battle, and
Christian was completely outmatched in terms of strength. Could he overcome the difficulties?

The Valley of the Shadow of the Death:


Character:
1. Two giants: “Both with a taste for pilgrims’ blood. But one had now been dead for many years;
the other, whose name was Pagan, though he was still alive, by reason of his age, had grown too
stiff in his joints to venture far. He could now do little more than sit in the cave’s mouth, biting his
nails in frustration at not being able to molest the pilgrims passing by.

2. Faithful: Christian’s neighbor, also a pilgrim.


Verses:
“The Lord is my shepherd, I lack nothing. He makes me lie down in green pastures, he leads me
beside quiet waters, and he refreshes my soul. He guides me along the right paths for his name’s
sake. 4 Even though I walk through the darkest valley, I will fear no evil, for you are with me;
your rod and your staff, they comfort me. 5 You prepare a table before me in the presence of my
enemies. You anoint my head with oil; my overflows. 6 Surely your goodness and love will follow
me all the days of my life, and I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever.” (Psalm23:)

Summary:
After defeating Apollyon, Christian faced the greatest temptation and threat of his journey, the
Valley of the Shadow of Death. The road inside was rugged, narrow, very dark, and full of
dangers. Giants, goblins, and many other monsters lived in the valley. But Christian relied on the
faith from God to walk the right path, overcome his fear, and finally successfully walked out of
the Valley of the Shadow of Death. Later, he met his neighbor Faithful, and the two of them
traveled together.

Vocabulary:

Vanity Fair

Characters:
1. Envy, Superstition, Mr. Pickthank: Three witnesses, full of false and accusatory testimony.
2. Judge: Named Lord Hate-good. As the name suggests, he didn’t search for justice and not
judging fairly.
3. Mr. Blind Man, Mr. No-good, Mr. Malic, Mr. High-mind, Mr. Heady, Mr. Cruelty: The
foreman. No justice and fair, cruel and without conscience. They really want to kill Faithful.
4. Hopeful: “Well one of the men of the fair named Hopeful, was much moved by the calm
deportment of the pilgrims. And while the people crowded round to see the execution, He
succeeded Faithful.” Then he traveled with Christian.
5. Demas: A man lures travelers to a silver mine.

Summary:

Faithful and Christian arrive at the Vanity Fair, where they arouse the anger of the people because
they are not interested in the goods. The two are arrested. The locals kill Faithful, while Christian
escapes safely. Meanwhile, Hopeful and Christian travel together, and the two overcome the
temptation of the silver mine and continue on their journey.

Verses:
Buy the truth and do not sell it— wisdom, instruction, and insight as well. ( Proverb
23:23)

A wicked person earns deceptive wages, but the one who sows righteousness reaps a
sure reward (Proverb 11:18)

As they were walking along and talking together, suddenly a chariot of fire and horses of
fire appeared and separated the two of them, and Elijah went up to heaven in a whirlwind.
(Kings2 2:11)

For Demas, because he loved this world, has deserted me and has gone to Thessalonica.
(2 Timothy 4:10)

Doubting Castle

Characters:
1. Giant of Despair: The owner of the Doubting Castle. A very strong and ruthless giant. He
killed many pilgrims passing by and put Christian and Hopeful in the dungeon.
2. Suspicious: The Wife of Giant Despair. Suspicious by nature, often gives advice to her
husband.

Summary: A storm was coming. Christian and Hopeful got off the right path on a shortcut and
came into the territory of Giant Despair by accident. Then, giant Lock them up. Under daily abuse,
Christian didn’t even want to live. Fortunately, as a good partner, Hopeful encouraged and
exhorted Christians again and again. At this time, Christian finded an important tool. The key of
Promise, Can they leave in a safe?
