INTRODUCTION
 Defect refers to the fault that spoils the material or
absence for completeness or perfection
 There is need to check fabric defects due to avoid
rejection of fabrics because then to sold the
manufactured material the price is reduced by 45-
65%.
 A defect of the knitted fabric is an abnormality
which spoils the aesthetics i.e. the clean & uniform
appearance of the fabric & effects the performance
parameters, like; dimensional stability etc.

COMMON DEFECTS OF KNITTED FABRICS
1. BARRINESS: It is a defect which is characterised by
textural braids or colour bands in the course direction of
a weft knitted fabrics.
Causes: *Use of irregular yarns long term irregularities.
*High yarn tension.
*Count Variation
HOLES  Holes can be of 3 types:
Hole, Pin hole, Star hole

 CAUSES: Broken needle


• Improper cleaning of
machine
• yarn breakage at knot
• very high yarn twist
• Curved needle latch
SLUBS
• It is unevenly placed
or randomly appearing
knots.
• CAUSES: Usually
caused by a thick or
heavy place in yarn or
by ling getting onto
yarn feeds.
OIL MARK
 When oil lick through the
needle trick then it pass on
the fabric and make a line it is
then called oil mark/stain/line.
 CAUSES:
• Grease and oil stains from the
unguarded moving machine
parts.
• Fabric touching the floors
and soiled places, during
transportation on the trolleys.
BROKEN NEEDLE
 Defects caused by the broken needles
show prominently as vertical lines
parallel to the Wales. There are no
loops formed in the Wale which has a
broken needle.
 Causes:

• High Yarn Tension

• Bad Setting of the Yarn Feeders

• Old & Worn out Needle set.


DROP STITCHES
 Local column of dropped stitches.

 CAUSES:
• yarn guide may not be set
properly.
• Defective latch needle .
• Yarn tension is too high.
• Wrong yarn threading
