Before I Hit the rock.
Let’s Talk About Skills….
What is a Skill?
According to the Cambridge Advanced Learner's Dictionary, skills are defined
as the ability to do something well, usually gained through training or experi-
ence.
Take note of the word “To do something well” and gaining experience - this
simply means you have to do something well and then you will become a
master in it.
1

cial value. Earning money is one of the major reasons people offer their ser-

skill, however mastering high-income skills that are aligned with your inter-
ests help you scale up your income.
Just as there are skills in high demand, there are also skills that yield
high income.
Below is a list of skills with high-income value in 2023:
1. Copywriting: This is an aspect of writing that focuses mainly on writing
texts for advertising or other forms of marketing. The written content is re-
ferred to as the sales copy which are usually words used on web pages, ads

They do this by writing lines and lines of complicated codes, using a varie-

essentially have to take a language we understand, such as English, and
translate it into a language that a computer understands, such as Python
or HTML.
4. Digital marketing: Digital marketing involves marketing products or ser-
vices through electronic devices. The main aim of digital marketing is to
introduce people to your business and influence them to interact with
the business through the online system. There are various scopes of digi-

scopes. It all depends on you where your strength and interests lie.
These scopes include:

5. Content marketing
6. Search engine marketing
Of the above, we will extensively look at a few.
15
UNDERSTANDNG DIGITAL SKILLS
Social Media Marketing
Social media marketing is the use of social media platforms and websites
to promote a product or service. Although the terms e-marketing and digi-
tal marketing are still dominant in academia, social media marketing
is becoming more popular for both practitioners and researchers. Most so-
cial media platforms have built-in data analytics tools, enabling companies
to track the progress, success, and engagement of ad campaigns.
Companies address a range of stakeholders through social media mar-
keting, including current and potential customers, current and potential
employees, journalists, bloggers, and the general public. On a strategic lev-
el, social media marketing includes the management of a marketing cam-
paign, governance, setting the scope (e.g. more active or passive use)
and establishment of a firm's desired social media "culture" and "tone."
Search Engine Optimization
Search Engine Optimization is a process where a website is opti-
mized to get targeted search engine traffic.
Usually, your job is to use targeted keywords that increase the quantity
and quality of traffic to your website when searches are carried out online
with those keywords. Also, you will plan, implement and manage the cli-
ent website’s overall SEO strategy .
When using social media marketing, firms can allow customers and Inter-
net users to post user-generated content (e.g. online comments, product
reviews, etc.), also known as "earned media," rather than use marketer-
prepared advertising copy.
16
SONIA AYISA ATSEN
As a social media marketer, your job is to create and implement social me-
dia marketing strategies for a business. These include;
Creating Social Media profiles.
Developing & Implementing promotion & engagement strategy. - Brand
Development
Managing regular posts.
Responding to followers and much more.
When deciding what keywords to include in your text, you should
consider things such as the relevance of the keyword(s) to your website
and company, as well as the competitors that are using the same keyword
(s) (you can check this by running a quick Google search of chosen key-
words yourself, and seeing what sites appear at the top of the list).
To discover the value of your keywords, you can buy a sample cam-
paign from Google AdWords, which will allow you to test the traffic gener-
ated by your chosen keywords. If these three things are in check i.e. the
keywords are relevant to your website, competitors are experiencing suc-
cess with similar keywords, and a sample campaign yields high traffic—
you should feel confident in moving forward with the keywords.
Your website content should always be interesting, engaging, short
and succinct. Choose keywords wisely, include optimized images with
great titles, have headings that are appealing and include relevant links.
All this should be formatted in an easy-to-read way.

Every skill improves with practice. What better way to practice than from
the comfort of your home?
Once, a certain lady didn’t want to go to school because she felt she was al-
ready too old. She was 36 and feared that by the time she graduated, She
would be 40, which to her was too old and also very embarrassing.
One of the best replies I have ever heard was given to her when she asked that
question. “Whether or not you go to school, in the next four years, you will still
be 40. So, what do you have to lose?”
24
UNDERSTANDNG DIGITAL SKILLS
And so, I ask you, dear reader, what do you have to lose in learning a
skill especially when you can do so online, at the comfort of your
home, and easily plan out your schedule?
Ideas do not come out fully formed, they only become clear as they
are worked on. However, work on them you must. You have got to
push yourself out of your comfort zone and take action in order to
achieve that goal.
