Lesson Title: The Cow in the House: A Lesson Plan for 1st Time 1 hour

Standard Language: This lesson plan aims to improve
1st-grade students' reading comprehension skills through
exciting interactive activities based on the book "The
Cow in the House" by Harriet Ziefert.
1.RF.4, 1.SL.1, 1.SL.2, 1.SL.3, 1.SL.4
Student-Friendly Language: In this lesson, we will
learn how to understand and remember what we read by
doing fun activities with a story called "The Cow in the
House."

Time Pre-Assessment
Materials
Before diving into the story, I believe it is essential to activate students' Dry erase markers
5 min prior knowledge and introduce them to brand-new vocabulary words. These
initial steps will prepare them for a more meaningful reading experience.

Brainstorm: Based on the title and cover illustration, I will ask my students
what they think the story is about. We will write down their ideas on the
board for all to see.

Vocabulary Introduction: I will introduce to my class any new words or


concepts from the story that may be unfamiliar. Using the board, real-life
examples, or gestures to help make their meanings more straightforward.

While reading the story, I will encourage students to interact


actively with the text while reading the story. This promotes better
comprehension, maintains their attention, and helps them remember
important details for later.

Direct Instructions Learning Activity.

Choral Reading: By placing my finger under the word, I will have my students read aloud certain parts of the
story together, emphasizing keywords or phrases.

Think-Pair-Share: I will take measures to pause at certain intervals during the story and ask students to think
about a specific question or event. Then, have them discuss their thoughts with a seat partner before sharing
them with the whole class. I like this strategy because it encourages critical thinking and maintains active
participation.

How will you check for students understanding during this learning activity?

After completing the story, it is crucial for me to reinforce the students' comprehension and encourage
reflection on what they have read. These key activities will help cement their understanding.

Guided Practice Learning Activity #2.

1. Retelling: I will ask students to retell the story in their own words. Depending on the mood of the
classroom, I can chose students to share or divide the class into small groups. This exercise helps them
practice their summarizing skills.
2. Creative Writing: I can have my students write a different ending for the story or possibly create an
alternate plot twist. I cannot wait to see their creativity as they demonstrate their comprehension of
story.
3. Character Analysis: I will have them choose one or more characters from the story and ask my
students to describe them, their traits, and their motivations. I want my class to deeply engage with the
text while promoting empathy and understanding.

How will you check for students understanding during this learning activity? I will ask students to retell the
story in their own words through writing or retelling.

Independent Practice Learning Activity #3


This lesson plan incorporates various strategies to enhance reading
comprehension skills in 1st-grade students. By engaging students in pre-
reading activities, activating prior knowledge, and introducing new
vocabulary, they are better prepared to understand the story.

During reading activities such as choral reading and think-pair-share, my


students actively interact with the text, improving their comprehension and
ability to make connections. These activities also promote collaboration and
critical thinking.

the main events of the story.

organizers to sort their ideas and analyze the characters, setting,
and plot of the book.
3. Reading Journals: I can have my students maintain a journal
where they jot down their reflections, connections, and questions
as they progress through the story.

Summative Assessments

1. Story Retelling: I will conduct a class-wide retelling activity,


where my students take turns recounting the events of "The Cow
in the House." This exercise allows me to gauge their
comprehension of the story's key elements.
2. Written Responses: I would assign a short writing task where
my students express their favorite part of the book and explain
why they enjoyed it. This assessment provides insights into their
comprehension and ability to articulate their thoughts.
