CHAPTER Ⅰ
THE PROBLEM
Introduction
For generations, study habits have always been the core of academic success, and it plays
a significant role in every student's life. It is the action and behaviors that students regularly and
habitually perform in order to facilitate their learning process. These habits can include activities
such as reading, note-taking, studying in groups, and managing time effectively. These habits are
what helps students to achieve high grades. It can be defined as effective or counterproductive
based in whether it serves the student well.
Bernice L. Sanalonis (1970) stated that study habits are when and where a student helps
to determine his academic success. The success or failure of each student depends on their
ability, intelligence, and actions. Thus, many effective study habits can help a student to
improve. Students' lack of awareness about effective study habits can lead to disparities in
achievement and increased stress. Which is why the reason for choosing this topic is to better
understand how study habits impact academic outcomes and to identify which study techniques
are most effective, especially for STEM students.
In the field of educational psychology that we are researching, the impact/s of study
habits is quite common. Although the topic itself is not quite unique, there are very few studies
that focus on study habits among students in the STEM fields. Aside from this, we also aim to
investigate the impact of various study techniques on different kinds of students. Given our goals
for this study, we will not be able to provide a deeper understanding into the relationship of
students' study habits and their academic performance due to our limited understanding of
educational psychology, and the resources available to us.
The purpose of this research is to understand why students have differing academic
performances in correlation with their study habits and routines. In addition to this, we also
intend for our research to benefit our fellow students, by giving them a basic insight on how their
study habits affect their academic performance, and/or as a basis for future researchers to
investigate the deeper variables and factors that are in play.

Statement of Purpose
The main purpose of this study is to examine the relationship between study habits and academic
performance of HNVS STEM students, to evaluate how it impacts into their learning.
Specifically, the study examines to:
1. What are some common study habits that HNVS STEM students use, and which ones
seem work best?
2. What are the kinds of challenges that students face that might make it harder for them to
study effectively?
3. How does this study habit contribute to their success in specific STEM strand?
Research Hypothesis
Null Hypothesis (Ho). There is a significant relationship between study habits and academic
performances among Hilongos National Vocational School (HNVS) STEM students.
Alternative Hypothesis (Ha). There is a significant relationship between study habits and
academic performances among Hilongos National Vocational School (HNVS) STEM students.
Significance of the Problem
The findings of this study are to improve the study habit, academic performance or
outcomes, supporting students’ success and addressing gap in knowledge. By understanding the
impact of study habit in academic performance particularly in STEM strand, we can create more
effective strategies for all students.
The findings of this study could be highly significant and beneficial to the following:
STEM student this study can be benefits students by making findings of this study as a guide
on how study habits impact their academic performance.
Teachers this study can be benefits teachers/educators on how to support students in
developing effective study habits that can lead to improved academic performance.
School to enhance students study habits, promoting academic achievement and promoting more
affective learning for all students.
Definition of Terms
Academic performance - refers to a student's achievements in their academic.
Study habits-refer to the consistent patterns of behavior, strategies, and routines that students
use to learn and prepare for academic tasks.
Time Management- Planning and allocating time effectively for studying.
Metacognition-awareness or analysis of one's own learning or thinking processes.
Active Learning: Engaging with material through techniques like notetaking, summarizing,
concept mapping, and active recall.
Impact- The effect or influence that study habits have on academic performance.
CHAPTER Ⅱ
REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE AND STUDIES
Academic performance is becoming more widely acknowledged as a critical factor in
determining student success and future career prospects in the quickly developing field of
Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM). Therefore, when it comes to
school performance of individual students, sometimes they may do well or badly in certain
courses depending on their understanding of what is taught their academic performance is the
primary indicator of a quality learning experience in every school setting, particularly in higher
institutions (Magulod, 2019). This review synthesizes the emerging literature on the impact of
study habit on the academic performance of HNVS STEM students study habits as simply how
students organize his or her time so that they frequently review, and study habits consist of
patterns of behavior they have developed throughout their academic career.R.M. Losare Ir.
(2009). They are practices that could allow a learner to somehow gain interest while studying
without having to feel pressured or bothered. Study habits are one of the most important
determinants of a student's academic performance (Jafari, 2019). In this chapter, we will present
the result of empirical researchers that examine the impact of study habits on the academic
performance of students, particularly focusing on Grade 11 and 12 Senior High School students
from the (STEM) Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics track at (HNVS) Hilongos
National Vocational School. Finally, we will bale to identify the research limitations and
recommend the possible areas of future researchers to avoid circumstances.
The purpose of all academic and non-academic activities of the schools is basically to
enhance the academic achievements of students (Anju Verma,2016). Academic achievements are
the outcome of the hard work students must endure. Among the many factors influencing student
performance, study habits have and will always play a significant role.
Intelligence characteristics such as intellectual capacity are used as predictors of academic
performances. Multiple studies have explored the function of non- cognitive influences, such as
study abilities, inspiration, study behaviors, and attitudes towards Academic achievement. The
research concluded that healthy study behaviors and optimistic research attitudes might
significantly affect student academic achievement (Sikhwari, 2016).
Looyeh, Fazelpour, Masoule, Chehrzad, and Leili (2017) have shown a substantial
association between students' research patterns and academic success. Determining the student's
study habits and the relationship between their study habits and academic success can boost their
academic achievement and learning habits.
Thiyagu (2013) studied how study habits can affect the students' academic achievement in
terms of their gender, locality, and residency. The respondents were given a standardized tool for
the measurement of the study habits variable. The results showed no significant relationship
between study habits and the students' academic aspects of their gender, locality, and residency.
A study conducted by students from the Technological Institute of the Philippines –
Manila investigated the students' study habits. 76 respondents were chosen out of the total
population of 105 scholars using the incidental sampling approach and were given survey
questionnaires to answer. The study showed that the academic performers' study habits were time
management, learning styles, and study environment. It contributes significantly to the academic
performers' performance (Foz, Gomez, Luz, Miron & Zarate, 2016).
Many studies have been carried out by researchers like Adeyemo (2005) and Gbore (2006)
on effective study habits. They argue that study habits have strong relationship with the
academic performance of students. A student who cultivates certain study habit will perform
differently from a student who has another set of study habit. It is believed that student who lacks
effective and efficient means of studying would be building on shaking foundation and
consequently have weak foundation. The teachers teach all the students collectively, but all the
students do not have the same grades, here we see underachievers and high achievers in
mathematics. With these the teachers get puzzled with the sight of such situations and then try or
push too much (Riaz, Asma& Niaz, 2002).
