Overall Project Information
Location : Jammu and Kashmir, India
Geological Context : Situated in Himalayan region with complex rock
formations, including dolomitic limestone and areas prone to high wind
pressure.
Construction Challenges :
Difficult Terrain : Rugged and Mountainous landscape with steep
slope
Environmental Condition : High wind speed, seismic activity, and
potential for blast impacts.
Safety Measures : Use of impact proof steel, advanced testing
methods, and strict safety protocols during construction.
Design Features :
Steel Arch Bridge : Iconic structure designed to resist extreme
loads and environmental conditions.
Innovative technique : Use of phased array ultrasonic testing, wind
tunnel testing, and advanced structural detailing software.
Project Objective
Primary goal is to design and Construct the Chenab Bridge as apart of
Jammu - Udhampur - Baramulla Rail Link, aiming to enhance connectivity
between the Kashmir Valley and rest of India.
Address Geographical Challenge : To Construct a long span bridge across
the Chenab River’s deep gorge and mountainous terrain.
To utilize a massive steel arch structure to withstand extreme environmental
conditions such as high wind speed, seismic activity and potential blast
impacts.
To improve transit accessibility and support the economic development of
the Jammu and Kashmir Region.
Project Scale
Length : 1315 meters ( 4314 feet )
Deck Height : 359 meters ( 1178 feet ) above riverbed
Arch Span : 485 meters ( 1532 feet )
Number of Spans : 17
Maximum Pier Height : 133.7 meters
Materials Used :
Steel : Approximately 25,000 tons for bridge structure
Concrete : Significant quantities for piers and foundations.
Reinforced Steel : 4000 tons
Quality Organization Structure
Quality Assurance Team
The QA team is responsible for overseeing the project-wide implementation of
quality systems, standards, and documentation. Multiple QA Managers will be
responsible for different sections of the project (e.g., foundation works, steel erection,
deck installation).
Lead Quality Assurance Manager
Reports to: Project Director
Responsibilities: Overall supervision of QA activities, periodic review of
the QA system, and ensuring compliance with quality objectives. The
Lead QAM will be responsible for coordinating QA efforts across
different sections.
Sectional Quality Assurance Manager (QA Managers) :
Reports to: Lead Quality Assurance Manager
Responsibilities: Manage QA activities in specific sections, such as:
Foundation QA Manager
Concrete Pier QA Manager
Steel Pier QA Manager
Deck QA Manager
Each manager will ensure that the process and systems in their assigned
section comply with overall quality management plan
Quality Control Team
The QC team will be responsible for hands-on inspection, testing, and
verification of completed work. Each QC Manager will be assigned specific zones of
the construction site.
Quality Organization Structure
Lead Quality Control Manager
Reports to: Project Director
Responsibilities: Oversee all QC activities, ensure consistency of
inspections and testing procedures, and verify that corrective actions are
implemented when needed.
Zone Quality Control Manager (QC Managers) :
Reports to: Lead Quality Control Manager
Responsibilities: Manage QA activities in specific sections, such as:
Foundation QC Manager
Pier QC Manager ( Concrete and Steel )
Deck QA Manager
These managers will monitor their respective sections for compliance with
the project specifications and quality requirements.
Inspectors and Engineers.
QA/QC Inspectors and Engineers will be assigned to each section and work
under the supervision of the QA and QC managers. Their responsibilities include day-
to-day inspection, documentation of non-compliance issues, and verification of testing
results.
