Assignment: Working of Pinhole Camera
PINHOLE CAMERA
A pinhole camera is the depiction of human intelligence from the old days. It wasn’t
an existing camera using lenses to capture.
BACKGROUND:
Ibn al Haitham is one of the known scientists of the Golden Muslim era. His
contributions were significant in the field of optics. The human eye, which always
has a perception of views and images, was tried experimentally to store this
perception. Ibn al-Haitham, known as Alhazen, studied the reverse image formed by
a tiny hole and indicated the rectilinear propagation of light.
OBSCURE CAMERA
A pinhole camera is also called an obscure camera. An obscure camera is a
darkened box space or room in which a hole or a lens project or depicts an image.
WORKING OF PINHOLE CAMERA
With an opening pinhole-sized, this camera doesn’t capture pictures through lenses
but reforms an image using that pinhole inside the dark confinement or box.
Consider a room with only one opening, a pinhole, connecting the inner world to the
outer world.
PROJECTION PLANE
A new image is formed on this plane by a pinhole camera. Light rays reflected or
refracted through the object pass through the aperture and reach the projection
plane.
The Field of View
The Field of View determines whether the camera captures a wide or narrow and
sharp image. Focal length and the hole size are the two factors that affect the field
of view. The shorter the focal length wider the projection perspective, linger the
focal length narrower the perspective.
Focal Length
It is the distance measured between the hole and the projection plane. As
mentioned, it used to vary the depth of the reformed image.
COP(Center of Projection)
It is the central point of this whole operation lies in between the hole and the
viewing screen. It depends on the geometry of the box. As the light rays pass
through the hole, they converge around the center of reflection and fall on the
projection plane.
Hence Pinhole Camera held an important place in the world of photography for its
simplicity and originality. Offering a different experience and technique which brings
a new perspective to photography and encourages artistic expression.
