Project Title :The Amount Of Tiles Used To Tile A Living Room

Introduction

The size of the room our group will be tiling is 12ft x 12ft. The different sizes of

the tiles we will be finding the cost of are: 16in x16in, 18in x18in and 22in x 22in.

Method Of Data Collection

1. We went to measure the length and breath of the room

2. The area of the room was calculated

3. We visited three hardware stores to determine the costs of tiles.

Hardware #1:

Hardware #2:

Hardware #3:

4. The tiles were chosen based on price, size and convenience

Table Showing the Hardware Invoices

(Presentation of Data)

Hard- Price Size

ware (inches)
1 12$ 16 x16

2 18$ 18 x 18

3 25$ 22 x 22
Analysis of Data

1. Room Dimensions in Feet:

The room is a square, measuring 12 feet by 12 feet.

2. Conversion to Inches:

Since tiles are typically measured in inches, we converted the room dimensions
from feet to inches.

1 foot = 12 inches.

Therefore, 12 feet × 12 = 144 inches.

So, the room is 144 inches by 144 inches.

3. Dividing by Tile Size:

Next, we divided the room’s dimensions (144 inches) by the tile size to determine
how many tiles fit along each side of the room.
For example, with 16×16 inch tiles:
144 inches ÷ 16 inches = 9 tiles along each side of the room.
4. Calculating the Total Number of Tiles:

Once we know how many tiles fit along the length and width, we multiplied them
to find the total number of tiles needed.

Example for 16×16 inch tiles:

9 tiles × 9 tiles = 81 tiles in total.

This process was repeated for different tile sizes (18×18 inch and 22×22 inch) to
determine how many of those tiles would fit in the same room.
Data Recap:

Room dimensions: 12ft × 12ft = 144 inches × 144 inches

Tile sizes:

16×16 inch tiles: 81 tiles

18×18 inch tiles: 64 tiles

22×22 inch tiles: 36 tiles

Analysis:

1. What is the data saying?

As the size of the tiles increases, fewer tiles are required to cover the floor.

This is because larger tiles cover more area, reducing the total number needed.

2. Patterns and trends:

There is an inverse relationship between the tile size and the number of tiles

required.

16×16 inch tiles require the most (81 tiles), while 22×22 inch tiles require the least

(36 tiles).

The pattern shows that as the tile size increases, the number of tiles decreases

approximately by the square of the ratio of the tile sizes.

3. Averages and percentages:

If we consider the total number of tiles needed for each size:

16×16 inch tiles: 81 tiles

18×18 inch tiles: 64 tiles, which is about 21% less than the 16x16 inch tiles.

22×22 inch tiles: 36 tiles, which is about 56% less than the 16x16 inch tiles.

This shows a significant reduction in the number of tiles as the size increases,

indicating that larger tiles might be more efficient in terms of installation time and

grout lines, though they may result in more wasted space around the edges that

need cutting.
