Tutorial sheet #02 (Continuous and Discrete LTI systems)

Subject: Signals and systems Branch: ECE-2024
Semester: III Course: ECT203

1) The discrete - time system shown in Fig. 1 - 36 is known as the unit delay element. Determine
whether the system is (a) memoryless, (b) causal, (c) linear, (d) time - invariant, or (e) stable.

x[n] y[n] = x[n - 1]

Unit Delay

2) A system has the input - output relation given by

y[n] = T{x[n]} = nx[n]

Determine whether the system is (a) memoryless, (b) causal, (c) linear, (d) time - invariant or
(e) BIBO stable

3) Let T represent a discrete - time LTI system. Then show that T zn = λz

n

where z is a complex variable and λ is a complex constant.

4) Consider a continuous - time system with the input - output relation

1 t + T/2
y(t) = T{x(t)} = x(𝜏)d𝜏
T t - T/2

Determine whether this system is (a) linear, (b) time - invariant, (c) causal.

5) Consider a continuous - time system with the input - output relation

y(t) = T{x(t)} = ∑ x(t)𝛿(t - kTs)
k = -∞
Determine whether this system is (a) linear, (b) time - invariant

6) A system is called invertible if we can determine its input signal x uniquely by observing its
output signal y. This is illustrated in Fig. 1 - 43. Determine if each of the following systems is
invertible. If the system is invertible, give the inverse system.

x y x
System Inverse System

a) y(t) = 2x(t)
b) y(t) = x2(t)

∫ x( )d
t
c) y(t) = 𝜏 𝜏

n
d) y[n] = ∑ x [ k]
k = -∞
e) y[n] = nx[n]

7) Given a system whose input - ouptut relation is given by the linear equation
y(t) = ax(t) + b

where x(t) and y(t) are the input and output of the system respectively and a and b are constants.
Determine if this system is linear or non - linear.

8) A discrete - time system is described by the following expression :

y(n) = y2(n - 1) + x(n)

Now, a bounded input of x(n) = 2δ(n) is applied to this system. Assuming that the system is
initially relaxed, check whether this system is stable or unstable.

9) Consider the system

y(t) = x2(t - t0) + 2
Determine whether the system is : (a) linear; (b) stable; (c) causal; Justify your answer.

10) The input signal x(t) and impulse response h(t) of a continuous - time system are described
as
x(t) = e -3t . u(t) and h(t) = u(t - 1)
Find out the output.

11) By using continuous - time convolution integral, find out the response of the system to
unit - step signal. Impulse response is given as
R
h(t) = e -tR/L . u(t)
L

12) Determine the convolution of the two continuous - time functions given below
x(t) = 3 cos(2t) for all t, and
t
-|t| e for t < 0
h(t) = e =
e -t for t ≥ 0
