Do Now Activity: Answer the questions
1. There are 4 forces acting on this boat. What force
does each letter represent?
A – Upthrust
B- Thrust
C- Weight
D- Drag
2. How will force D affect the boat?
It will slow the boat down
Physics Topic 8I Learning Journey
1. Why do solids, liquids and gases have different properties?
2. How does temperature affect density?
3. How do materials change state?
4. How do fluids apply pressure?
5. Why do some objects float but others sink?
6. What is drag and how can it be reduced?
7. Assessment
What is drag?
Learning Objectives:
• State what a drag force is
• Describe the factors that increase and decrease drag
Objects moving through air and water will have drag acting on it
Air
resistance
Water
resistance
The drag on a moving object is partly caused by friction between
the moving object and the fluid
What is drag?
Drag is another name for ________
water
resistance or air ___________.
resistance It is caused by
__________in
particles fluids hitting the moving object,
and by the force needed to push the moving
object out of the way
What is drag?
Learning Objectives:
• State what a drag force is
• Describe the factors that can increase and decrease drag
Speed affects drag
More speed = more drag
more fluid has to be pushed out of the way per second
Shape of the object affects drag
streamlined =
less drag
Fluids can
move
around the
object easily
Size of the object affects drag
Bigger surface area = more drag
Larger objects have to push more fluid out of the way
Progress check: put the statements in the correct column
Increases drag making it Decreases drag making
harder to push fluids out it easier to push fluids
of the way out of the way
Streamlined shape
Shape is bulky
Object moving very fast
Large surface area
Decreasing speed
Small surface area
Progress check: check your answers
Increases drag making it Decreases drag making
harder to push fluids out it easier to push fluids
of the way out of the way
Large surface area Streamlined shape
Shape is bulky Decreasing speed
Object moving very fast Small surface area
Task 1: Answer the questions on the worksheet (8Ie-1)
Challenge me:
1. Suggest 2 ways a car designer could increase the top
speed of a new car?
2. Why does an aircraft need a force (thrust) from its engines
to fly at a steady speed?
Answers:
1. Make the shape more streamlined. Reduce the surface
area of the car
2. To balance out the drag forces acting on the aircraft
Task 1: Check your answers
1.
Task 1: Check your answers
2.
a. Car B
b. Car B
3.
a. US Navy submarine
b. US Navy submarine
c. US Navy submarine
Task 1: Check your answers
d. Alvin.
It is smaller and slower compared to the
submarine so it has 2 things that would reduce
drag. The submarine is only streamlined.
EXAM QUESTION
A mini cooper is travelling at 30 mph and a range rover is
travelling at 80 mph. Why does the range rover need more
thrust from its engines than the mini cooper. Use ideas
about forces and drag in your answer. (3 marks)
The range rover is bigger in size than the mini cooper so
there will be more drag acting on it (1). The range rover
has a higher speed than the mini cooper (1) so it needs
more thrust to balance the higher drag (1).
What is drag and how can it be reduced?
Learning Objectives:
• State what a drag force is
• Describe ways that drag forces can be increased or
decreased
