1. GENERAL DESCRIPTION OF PUMP ROOM
The sprinkler system consists of a diesel driven unit and a
jockey / pressurization pump.
There are separate wall mounted controllers for each of
the above pumps. Test arrangements for testing the
automatic starting of all pumps are mounted on the pump
house wall, these test arrangements have pressure
switches, which automatically start the pumps at the
preset pressures.
2. SPRINKLER FIRE PUMPS AND CONTROLS
2.1 JOCKEY PUMP
The jockey pump is a pressure maintaining pump, which
will keep the system at a pressure, which is above that
which will cause the diesel sprinkler pump to operate
automatically.

2.2 JOCKEY PUMP CONTROLLER
With the selector, which in the “manual” mode the pump
will start and run continuously.
With the selector switch in the “auto” mode the pump will
start and stop via a pressure switch on the test
arrangement to maintain the system pressure.
A pump running and a pump trip indicator is on the facia
of the jockey controller.
2.3 DIESEL SPRINKLER PUMP
The diesel sprinkler pump is the duty pump and would
operate on a fire condition.
2.4 DIESEL SPRINKLER PUMP CONTROLLER
Should the pressure drop in the sprinkler system and
reach the predetermined set point pressure on the test
arrangement for the diesel sprinkler pump then the

controller will latch onto this signal and start the diesel
fire pump automatically.
The fire alarm and pump run light will be illuminated. To
stop the pump, the reset push-button must be pressed
and then manually stopped on the diesel engine. If the
pressure in the sprinkler system is not up to the normal
level the diesel pump will restart as soon as the engine
stop lever is released.
If the diesel engine does not start immediately on
receiving a test or automatic signal the diesel engine will
proceed through a crank cycle.
The diesel engine will crank on battery No1 for 15
seconds and dwell for 6 seconds before attempting to
crank on battery No2. A total of 6 start attempts are
made, after which the start cycle will stop and a pump fail
light will be illuminated on the diesel controller.
Should the diesel engine start at any time during the
cranking of the diesel engine the diesel controller will

receive a signal from the diesel engine and will abort the
crank cycle.
The test push-button on the diesel controller will simulate
an automatic start from the test arrangement and the
pump will operate as listed above.
Emergency start push buttons 1 or 2 will bypass the
automatic and control circuits and will start the diesel
pump set. When the diesel pump set is started like this
the pump run light only will be illuminated.
The diesel engine must be manually stopped by pulling
the engine stop lever on the diesel engine.

4. WEEKLY TEST PROCEDURE SPRINKLER PUMPS
It is an A.S.I.B. requirement that the sprinkler pumps are
tested weekly.
4.1 SPRINKLER INSTALLATION CONTROL VALVES
1) Before and after testing record the pressure at
the installation gauge and water supply gauge.
2) Actuate the alarm valve by opening the test
valve and check the valve for correct operation.
3) Check for the correct operation on the external
alarm, motor and gong.
4) Check that all stop valves are secured in the
open or closed position, as appropriate.
Attention must be given to the main control
valves, alarm clocks, waste and test valves.

5) Check that the required spare sprinklers and
sprinkler spanner are on hand.
4.2 PUMP HOUSE AND WATER SUPPLIES
1) Check water level and automatic filling facilities
of water supply tanks.
2) Check all water level warning devices.
3) Check the diesel and annunciator batteries and
battery chargers are free from corrosion in
battery cabinet or compartment and security of
battery in its position.
4) Check diesel engine oil level with dipstick.
5) Check water coolant level in heat exchanger,
should be approx. ¾ full.
6) Start all pumping units from the test valve on
the auto start arrangement.
4.3 JOCKEY PUMP
A. Manually test pump starting by switching
hand/auto to the hand position. After start up,
return switch to the auto position.

B. Test the automatic starting of this pump by
dropping the pressure on the pressure switch in
the following manner:
1. Close valve A on the auto start arrangement (refer
to auto start drawing).
2. Slowly open valve B to drop the pressure and at
the predetermined setting. The pump will start.
Close valve B and open valve A to allow the
pressure to return, the pump will stop.
4.4 DIESEL ENGINE PUMP SET
A. Start engine on test buttons and check the
following:
1. Water, oil and fuel leaks and for loose fittings and
ancillary equipment.
2. Cooling water flow in sight glass (Stop engine
immediately should this not be flowing).

3. Efficient pump gland operation.
4. Check that the audible (Continuous) siren and
flashing light outside the pump house are operating.
5. Check “Fire” and “pump running” pilot lights are
alight on the diesel/annunciator panel.
6. Ensure “Low Oil Pressure” light is not signalling.
7. Before and after running, check oil, water and fuel
levels. Top up if required.
8. Stop the engine by FIRST depressing the
“STOP/RESET” button then holding the fuel shut-off
lever on the diesel engine in the off position until the
engine is stationary.
THE ENGINE WILL RESTART IF THE “STOP/RESET”
BUTTON IS NOT FIRST DEPRESSED

9. After running engine for a minimum period of 15
minutes ensure that the engine stop mechanism
automatically returns to start position.
B. Start the engine via the Auto / Start
arrangement by the following procedure:
1. Close valve C on the auto start arrangement (refer
auto start drawing).
2. Slowly open valve D to allow the pressure to drop,
check that the pumps start at the predetermined
pressure setting.
3. Check all items as per (A) above.
4. Close valve D and open valve C to allow
pressure to return to normal reset pressure. Stop
pump set as per A8 above.
