express your ideas in an appropriate and meaningful way by using phrases.
The lessons you will gain from this module will help you make more
detailed and informative sentences that could enhance your writing and oral
communication skills.

informative sentence. After you finished studying this module, you should

2. used phrases properly, appropriately and meaningfully in sentences.

How did your pre-test go? Was it hard? Don’t worry. Just study this
module diligently and you’ll find this lesson easy and interesting. Let’s begin.
Do you have an idea what a phrase is?
A phrase is a group of words used much like a single word. It is a
sequence of two or more words arranged in a grammatical construction and
acts as a unit in a sentence. This group of words does not contain a subject
and its verb or the predicate so it does not express a complete idea.
Before we proceed, let us first recall the lesson you have learned about
a sentence. You did understand that a sentence is a group of words, just like
a phrase, but a sentence has a subject (talked about in a sentence) and a
predicate (tells about the subject). It expresses a complete thought or idea so
it makes sense as a group of words.
A phrase is a part of a sentence. It could be placed anywhere in the
sentence. It could go with the subject or with the predicate.
Examples:
With the subject: 1. The old book was sold.
2. A true friend is hard to find.
With the predicate: 3. I need to study my lessons.
4. Many tourists are excited to visit again the beautiful
Boracay Island.

One example of a phrase is noun phrase.
A noun phrase is a group of words that are grammatically connected
with a noun as its head. It is a phrase that works as a noun in a sentence.
A noun phrase must always have a noun, but it may contain some
other words that modify it, such as articles (a, an, the), adjectives (three,
red, big), participles (wooden, swimming, chosen) and possessive
pronouns (my, your, our, their).
Examples:
the wooden spoon
Three red bags
Their big swimming pool
A basket
The nouns spoon, bags, pool and basket are the heads of the noun
phrases, and the words around each noun (head) are its modifiers (a word or
group of words that provide description or information about another word in
the same sentence).
Study the following sentences.

1. The chef uses a wooden spoon in cooking.
S V NP
2. My godmother gave me three red bags.
S V NP
3. We enjoyed at their big swimming pool.

4. A basket of bananas was delivered today.

Notice that the sample noun phrases (NP) are now making sense
because they are now used as a part of a sentence. So, it is now clear that if
a noun phrase is added to a sentence, the idea expands and becomes more
meaningful.

Another example of a phrase is the adjectival phrase.
An adjectival phrase like adjectives, modify nouns. They tell or
answer the question which or what kind.
Examples:
1. The book on the table is mine.
2. This balikbayan box from my sister is so big.
3. My sister in Canada sends us packages.
4. The movie about God’s miracles is inspiring.
The phrase “on the table” describes the noun, (book). It points out
“which one is my book?” The one on the table.
In the second sentence, the phrase “from my sister” modifies the noun,
“balikbayan box”. It describes “which balikbayan box is so big?” The one that
is from my sister.
In sentence number three, the phrase “in Canada” modifies the noun
(subject), sister. Sister answers the question “which sister sends us
packages?” ( the one living in Canada )
The phrase “about God’s miracles” in the last example modifies the
noun movie and answers the question “what kind of movie is inspiring?”
To explain further, an adjectival phrase can do what an adjective can.
The only thing is, it is a group of words taken as one unit. Look back and read
the three sentences again. Compare them with these:
1. The book is mine.
2. This balikbayan box is so big.
3. My sister sends us packages.

Do you see the difference? The sentences above are shorter, plain,
simpler and they lack details or descriptions to make the ideas to be more
meaningful and informative.
The phrases used in the four sentences are examples of adjectival
phrase. You have learned previously that an adjective is a part of speech that
modifies or describes a noun or pronoun.
Therefore, the phrases “on the table”, “from my sister”, “in Canada” and
“about God’s miracles” are phrases used as adjectives (adjectival phrases)
because they modify the nouns book, box, sister and movie.
Take note also of the position of the adjectival phrases in the sentence.
The puppy with a pink ribbon is mine.
The book about photography is very helpful.
When you use an adjectival phrase in a sentence, be sure to place the
phrase right after the word it modifies. The phrases “with a pink ribbon” and
“about photography” are placed next to the words they modify.
Now, study the following sentences:
1. My book lies on the table.
2. That balikbayan box arrived before the event.
3. In Canada, my sister goes to work by driving her own car.
4. Our life is getting better because of our bayanihan spirit.
In the first sentence, the phrase, “on the table”, modifies the verb lies.
It answers the question “where does my book lie”? (on the table).
The phrase on the second sentence “before the event”, modifies the
verb arrived. It answers the question “when did the balikbayan box arrive”?
(before the event).

In the third sentence, the phrase “by driving her own car” modifies the
verb goes. It answers the question “how does my sister go to work”? (by
driving her own car). The phrase “in Canada” answers “where does my sister
go to work?” (in Canada).
In the last sentence, the phrase “because of our bayanihan spirit”
modifies the adjective better and answers the question “why is our life getting
better?” (because of our bayanihan spirit).
This time, these three phrases function as adverbial phrases because
they modify verbs. You have already learned that an adverb modifies a verb,
an adjective and another adverb. Adverbs also answer the question where?
(adverb of place), when? (adverb of time) and how? (adverb of manner).
Notice that the placement of the adverbial phrase could be at the
beginning of the sentence or after the word it modifies.
Take a look at these examples.

1. Outside the classroom, the students talk to each other.

2. Some students study their modules in the room.

3. They travelled by plane.
In the first example, the phrase, “outside the classroom” is placed at
the beginning of the sentence.
In the second sentence, the phrase “in the room” is placed after the
word it modifies.
In the third sentence, the phrase “by plane” is placed after the word it
modifies.

Notice also that while a noun phrase begins with a modifier, an
adjectival and adverbial phrase begin with prepositions. (in, on, at, for, from,
about, with, etc.)
Remember that in making your sentence using phrases, be sure to
place the phrases in the right position to express an appropriate and
meaningful idea.
Exercise 1. Tell whether the underlined group of words is a noun phrase,
adjectival or adverbial phrase. Write your answers on the space before the
number.

To easily remember the lesson, bear these important points in mind.
A phrase is only a part of a sentence; it is a group of words that has no
subject and predicate. Phrases expand the sentence to provide
information and descriptions.
A noun phrase is a group of related words with a noun as its head.
An adjectival phrase, like adjectives, modify nouns. It tells or answer
the question which or what kind. Generally, it is placed directly after
the word it modifies.
An adverbial phrase, like adverbs, modify verbs, adjectives, adverbs
and answers the question, when, where, how and why. It may be
placed at the beginning of the sentence or after the word it
modifies.
A noun phrase begins with a modifier while both the adjectival and
adverbial phrases begin with a preposition
