Course Objectives
• The objective of this course is to provide
• a procedure of choosing and designing controllers for power
electronics systems.
• By the end of the course, students will compare the advantages and
disadvantages of control methodologies use in modern power
electronics applications and students will design controllers with
stable operation and reaching performance requirements.

PLECS Licenses (2023)
• U Manitoba's Code is 4cd-X3cvX73f
• The only caveat is that a university email address must be used to
make the license request — the email must end with
@umanitoba.ca (the variation @myumanitoba.ca is ok.)
• Licenses are requested from https://plexim.com/store/students.
• Intended for students’ own personal computers.
• Licenses valid for a year from date of request.
• Code is case-sensitive.
• Code Licenses may not be used for post-doctoral or commercial
work.
• If a student needs to replace his/her computer, or otherwise has an
issue, they should notify us by email.

Project
• Objectives
• To study the process of designing a control system for Power
Electronic converters with practical components.
• Group Project
• Member per Group: 2-3 students.
• Task: Design and implement a control for a specific application
with experimental results.
• Evaluation:
• Oral: 30 mins for final presentation 15%
• Demonstration 10 mins 5%
• Documentation: A final report 5 pages 10%
Carl Ho
11
What should you do?
• Look for a power electronic application
• Define its control objective(s)
• Model the system
• Design a controller by Simulations
• System analysis and stability study
• Implement the controller physically
• Demonstration
• Presentation and Documentation
Carl Ho
12
Example - PFC
• The application is power factor correction.
• Control the input current and output voltage to be sinusoidal and
stable respectively.
• Design the controller in PLESC.
• Will be Implemented by a controller IC with a PFC PCB.
• Note: Converter implementation is minor in the evaluation, you
can use RT-Box, Opal-RT, RTDS, LabVolt or Actual converter
simulate the power stage. But the controller has to be physically
implemented by one of the following approaches, Op Amp,
Controller IC, DSP and LabVolt controller.
• Lecture 5 Prepare a 2 page ppt about the proposal
Carl Ho
13
Project Evaluation
• Report Final Presentation
• Summarize the project.
• Discuss the overall design.
• Demonstrate the results.
• Method of Evaluation and Limitations.
• Conclusion.
• All students can ask questions.
• Report Documentation
• It should include literature review, and from design to the results.
• Demonstration
• 10 mins interview to show the system works.
