CRIMINOLOGY DEPARTMENT

GENEDU7 – SCIENCE, TECHNOLOGY, AND SOCIETY

SEMI-DETAILED LESSON PLAN ON GENE THERAPY AND STEM CELL THERAPY

T. P. – 2024

I. OBJECTIVES

After this lesson, the students are expected to:

a. understand the basics, including the principles, applications of these therapies;

b. explore the mechanisms of action, such as how gene delivery and expression
occur in gene therapy, and how the stem cells differentiate and integrate in stem cell therapy; and

c. study the potential applications, including how these therapies can be used to
treat medical conditions such as genetic disorders, cancers, and degenerative diseases.

II. CONTENT

A. Topic: Gene Therapy and Stem Cell Therapy

III. PROCEDURES

A. Preliminary Activities:

1. Greetings:

The reporters will start the class with a short prayer, greetings, and checking of attendance.

2. Priming:

2.1. Review

In this part, the reporter will ask the students to recall the topic of the last reporters.

2.2. Motivation

The reporter will facilitate and activity called “Pass the Message” for the students to help
them better understand the topic. The game will involve at least five students forming two groups tasked
with passing along a riddle that the last student in line must solve. The first group to reach three points
will win the game.

B. Lesson Proper

1. Presentation

The reporters will start by giving an overview of gene, DNA, gene therapy, and stem cells using a
PowerPoint presentation. Key points will include:

a. Basic definitions and explanations of gene therapy and stem cell therapy.

b. Overview of how gene therapy works, including methods of gene delivery and expression.

c. Introduction to stem cell therapy and the process of stem cell differentiation and integration.

2. Interactive Discussion

The reporters will invite the students to ask and discuss the concepts presented. This allows
students to clarify any doubts and deepen their understanding.

3. Case Studies

The reporters will present real-world case studies demonstrating the applications of gene and
stem cell therapy in treating specific medical conditions. This can include examples of successful
treatments and ongoing research.
C. Conclusion:

Recap:

The reporter will summarize the key points covered during the session, ensuring students
understand the basic concepts and potential applications of gene therapy and stem cell therapy.

Questions and Answers:

Allows students to ask any remaining question and provide additional explanations as needed.

IV. EVALUATION

Activity: Group Activity and Quiz Bee

Description: The group activity consists of a recorded quiz bee, in which students work
together in small groups to answer questions on gene therapy and stem cell therapy. This
approach combines the excitement of a quiz competition with the collaboration of team-based
learning, allowing groups to discuss and answer questions together. The group's final score is the
sum of their answers throughout the quiz.

Procedure:

Team Formation: Divide students into small groups of 3-5 members each. Encourage a
mix of students with varying knowledge levels within each group to promote peer learning.

Quiz Format: The quiz bee consists of a series of questions that cover various aspects of
gene therapy and stem cell therapy. The questions can be presented in multiple-choice, true/false,
or short-answer format, and can also include case-based scenarios.

Question Presentation: The reporter will present each question to the class, providing a
set time for each group to discuss and record their answer. A timer can be used to manage the
time allotted for each question, ensuring that groups remain focused and concise in their
discussions.

Answer Submission: Once a group has agreed on an answer, one designated member
from each group will submit their group's response using the agreed format, such as a written
answer sheet or a digital form.

Recording Scores: The reporter will keep track of the groups' scores as answers are
submitted. The scores are cumulative and will determine the overall group performance.
Feedback and Reflection: After each question, the reporter will provide the correct
answer and offer explanations as needed to help students understand the material better. This
immediate feedback loop is crucial for reinforcing learning and clarifying any misconceptions.

Winning Group: At the end of the quiz bee, the reporter will announce the winning group
based on their cumulative score. A small prize or recognition can be given to the winning group
to celebrate their achievement.

This group activity and recorded quiz bee structure not only creates an engaging and
interactive learning experience but also fosters teamwork and collaboration. It allows students to
consolidate their understanding of the subject while encouraging a friendly and motivating
competitive environment.

V. ASSIGNMENT

Write a 150-word essay summarizing the topic that the reporters discussed. Write it in a piece of
yellow pad paper.
