LAB 4
Editing Attributes, Geoprocessing Toolbox, Elevation Profiles, and Export Layers
1.0 LAB OUTCOME
Students will learn the procedures in editing attributes, applying different vector tools and
processing toolbox, as well as exporting layers into different file formats.
2.0 OBJECTIVES
1) Adding Polygon Area field using Attribute Table’s Field Calculator.
2) Create buffer zone on vector data and perform intersect analysis.
3) Execute Elevation Profile Tool.
4) Export layers to AutoCAD and KML files.
3.0 INSTRUCTIONS
1) Import the layer “Landuse_polygon” you have merged and clipped from lab 3 into ArcGIS
Pro.
2) Open the attribute table of the layer “Landuse_polygon” above.
3) Add new field in the attribute table namely “Area (m2)”, choose data type as “Long”, number
format as “numeric” with zero decimal point. Save your edits.
4) Right click on the Area (m2) field label, choose calculate geometry.
5) Select “Landuse_polygon” layer in the input feature, existing field = Area (m2), property =
Area, unit = square meters, and choose the desired coordinate system, then click OK.
6) Use the explore tool again and notice the new field “Area (m2)” has been added with values.
7) Close the attribute table.
8) Open the layer “Roads_2” layer from lab 2 into ArcGIS Pro.
9) Go to “Geoprocessing” > “Toolboxes” > “Analysis Tools” > “Proximity” > Buffer.
10) In the input feature select “Roads_2” layer, choose location to save the new layer named as
“polygon_buffer”, and distance value set as 10 m.
1
11) Carry out the buffer tool with distance = 10 m again with the input feature is the newly
buffered road layer. Save this vector polygon as “Widened Roads_Polygon.shp.
12) Edit the symbology so that it shows just the polygon outline.
13) Go to “Geoprocessing” > “Toolboxes”. Search for Intersect.
14) In the input features, select “Widened Roads_Polygon.shp” and “Landuse_Polygon.shp”
layers.
15) Specify the location and give the file name “[Link]” and click “Run”.
16) Open Attribute table of the intersection polygon and right click on the Area Field.
17) Run the calculate geometry process again to update the intersected area.
18) Save your project.
19) Import the Masked SRTM raster layer that you have created in Lab 2 into the workspace.
20) Go to “View” button > “Convert” > “Local Scene”. A new tab with 3D Map is created.
21) Go to “Analysis” button and click the Exploratory 3D Analysis to show the drop-down list.
Choose Elevation Profiles.
22) In the Content Pane, right click on the “Ground” layer group under the Elevation Surfaces,
then select Add Elevation: Source Layer. Find the Masked SRTM raster layer that you have
created in Lab 2 to open the layer into the workspace.
23) On the Exploratory Analysis Pane (right), activate the Interactive Placement button and notice
the curser has change to “+” sign. Click one end then double click another end on the SRTM
raster layer to show the elevation profile of the range that you have drawn.
24) Observed the elevation profile in the Profile Window.
25) Go to “Geoprocessing” > “Toolboxes” > “Conversion Tools” > “To CAD” > Export to CAD.
26) Select “Widened Roads_Polygon.shp” layer and export it as DXF or DWG latest version
available.
27) Similarly, export “Landuse [Link]” as DXF or DWG latest version available.
28) Start AutoCAD software, open file “Widened Roads_Polygon.dxf
29) Drag and drop the other dxf files into AutoCAD. Specify base point = 0,0,0; scale = 1,
rotation = 0.
30) Go to “Geoprocessing” > “Toolboxes” > “Conversion Tools” > “KML” > Layer to KML.
31) Select “Widened Roads_Polygon.shp” layer and define your Keyhole Markup Language
(KML) output filename and location. Then click Run.
32) Similarly, export “Landuse [Link]” as KML file.
33) Start AutoCAD software, open file “Widened Roads_Polygon.dxf
34) Drag and drop the other dxf files into AutoCAD. Specify base point = 0,0,0; scale = 1,
rotation = 0.
35) Double click / drag and drop the kml file to load in Google Earth.
2
36) Google earth pro has an internal coordinate projection system that will load your kml file at the
right location.
37) Check the name, if stated no name add the name in the properties.
38) Change the style and colour of the imported layers to make the map more presentable.
4.0 PRACTICAL SECTION
1) Open your study area selected in lab 1.
2) Manipulate the spatial analyses learned from this lab session to produce vector lines and points
in the study area.
3) Present the results obtained from the analyses.
4) Provide discussion and conclusion of the lesson learned from this lab session.
